Yet another 3:39 for leo, can't seem to get past it. Good first real attempt at a mile type distance for lex, can probably break 4 at Nike Outdoor Nationals
at least he’s consistent with 3.39 even though he’s probably frustrated that he can’t go faster than it. last night he seems like he tried to get around the pack and swung out to lane 3 but never could get fully around on a curve which takes a lot of energy away. his race tactic wasnt the best. Hopefully at NON against a high school field he won’t get stuck behind.
People have wondered why Leo has been running nothing longer than a mile & mostly 1500s. I know that Lex had been targeting the 5K and maybe Leo didn't want to rain on his parade. One thing that both of them may not have been aware of is that once they entered open meets and CIF ruled them ineligible for any further high school meets the availability of races was mainly limited to 800, 1500 and 5K. No 3200, two mile only in post season like Brooks, and mile also mainly post season. So after Portland it looks like they'll point to the Nike mile and then their racing season is over. On to Flagstaff, Big Bear and then Stanford XC.
Remember when Sean Brosnan said he would have four guys running under 8:30 for 2 miles?
I think he said it about Arcadia 3200, because they never ran a 2 mile. Remember that as juniors, Lex ran 8:32c, Aaron ran 8:36c (16 years old), and Leo was better than them both. It definitely didn't seem crazy at the time. Lex just ran 8:40 pace for 5k and Leo just beat him by 4s in a 1500, so they're probably in sub-8:30 shape right now.
I wish Leo had taken a stab at a 2 mile since Lex was focusing on the 5k record, but it's been fun watching him run 3:39 consistently anyway.

8:41 3200 pace = 844/5 2 mile pace.
That's certainly is no gimme / guarantee he could run an 8:29 2 mile
Geb and Bekele could run 8:08 2 mile pace for 5k and couldn't break 8:01 [ even converting their best 3K times along with Geb's three actual 8:01 2 mi times].
I know those two have super Elite endurance but the difference between their 2 mi pace during 5K and their actual 2 mi is only 7 Seconds. We are talking 15 seconds for Lex of he were to run 8:29 2 mi.
They might have broken 8:30 for the 3200 but I don't believe they would have run 8:29 for 2 miles like LV did.
The thing is maybe I was unfair to say this. Lex had been hurt for cross and predominantly has been training for the 5 while Leo has been training for the 1500 for a while.
Lex ran 7:57 3k as a junior and now 13:34 5000m as a senior. Sub-8:30 is very much possible. Same for Leo, who was 16th at World Jr XC. Aaron came into this season with an 8:01 or 8:03 as a junior and won NXN this year. It's conceivable he would have been close as well had he gone after the 2M and had the boys all continued to train together. Colin ran 3:56 last year and won nationals in xc, so count him as the fourth possible, and Nico ran 7:56.97 just before COVID and so was at least a candidate for 8:30 in 2020. That's a lot of what ifs but the potential was there for five of Brosnan's athletes to do it.
Lex's 13:34 5000m was run at 8:44 2M and 8:40.x 3200m pace. It's really not a big stretch to say that he might break 8:30 for 3200m or maybe even 2M. That's about 5.5 seconds faster per 1600 or 7 seconds per mile. Komen ran about 5 seconds slower per mile from 2M to 5000m.

His pacing was a bit off. A lot of that had to do with just wanting to maintain contact with the main group. But those guys were all going to run sub 13:20. But that meant coming through the 1600 in around 4:17 instead of his planned 4:21-4:22. He kept his cool and slowed down the 2nd mile to 4:29 so he wouldn't blow up and then had confidence that he could motor the last mile (esp the last 800). I like that the gap didn't faze him and he eventually closed well enough to pass a few runners.
