RI State Track & Field meet today - high temp about 53 degrees, winds up to 11mph, cloudy
Sophia Gorriaran (Moses Brown) only did 2 individual event, 1500m (4:35.24, 2nd place 4:38.35) and 800m (2:06.52 MR, 2nd place 2:16.27), and then ran a sub-55 split for the 4x400 anchor leg to secure her team the win by a margin of 8 seconds (4:02.08, second place 4:10.12).
The biggest "newsworthy" items surrounded the West Warwick girls team. They have a freshman girl who won 4 individual events (doesn't happen very often in RI, the last time a girl did that that I recall was back in 2001 - HJ, TJ, LJ, and 200). Lisa Raye (West Warwick) won the 100m (12.23, -3m/s wind, 2nd place 12.49), 200m (24.95, -3m/s wind, 2nd place 25.55 [happened to beat her sister]), 100H (14.87, -1.6m/s wind, 2nd place 16.25), and 300H (44.08, 2nd place 47.91). Her school ended up winning the girls' team title (I believe their first in school history). Another amazing thing is that their winning score of 67 points was done with only 3 scorers - the freshman quad winner (40 pts), her older sister (won 400m, 2nd in 200, 3rd in 100 - 24 pts), and a high jumper (6th - 3 pts) (top 8 score). Team only had 6 girls total competing at the state meet.
For the boys, US #2 Christian Toro (Lincoln High) set a new season best to win the state title in the hammer throw (229-03) over US #1 Ethan Wordell (2nd, 220-01). Rankings based on 6/1/23 ranking from hmmrmedia.com.
