Came to post the same. There was a dyestat interview with him and the other top 3A guys this week. He didn’t run seriously before high school and his parents don’t really have anything to do with his training. Consistent with what I’ve heard from others so not just an exaggeration. Beyond impressive. Bright future for this kid.
Also small world: the meet where the boys’ 12 year old world was broken this weekend was on Mercer Island, where the Powells live. Add the UW team and Washington = Miler Central USA.

Huh, i've seen him in the results before but I'm not sure why I never connected him to Andy and Maurica Powell. I guess it is a commonish last name in the US.
Makes sense though. That duel with Franklyn Sanchez is the stuff of legends.

Stacked in terms of times, definitely. However, kids are running faster these days. I’m impressed with how many sophomores were up there.
in terms of stacked based on future/past performances at national races, I there have been more impressive performers/stacked fields than this. (2011-2016 being the most stacked)
This below from an old thread on WA state meets:
One of the greatest Washingon State meet races was in the 1983 1600, when Matt Donnelly (Renton) edged Tom Bohannon (Issaquah) by 3/100ths: 4:05.58 to 4:05.61. Curt Corvin (Lakes) was third in 4:06. The kicker: as I recall, that in that year, Star Track was actually held in Renton (I may be mistaken). The place must have been in upheaval. Also note that all three athletes lived within 30 minutes of each other, on the *west side!*.
Is Cruize Corvin related to Curt Corvin? Seems pretty likely.

Owen Powell is also the nephew of 2002 footlocker finalist Sara Powell of Oliver Ames
Both Andy and Sarah went to Oliver Ames. Their school records have got to be fast
Granted times only tell part of the story, but it took under 4:12 to score points in the 3A race, and based on time alone, neither the 2A nor 4A champs would have scored points in the 3A race (and they ran either PR or SB times, so its not like they were lolly-gagging). Impressive for a sophomore to win a race like that.
Great race by these guys, love to see so many PR's in a state meet race. Bishop Blanchet's 5 guys went 4:08, 4:10, 4:12, 4:22 and 4:26; very impressive depth. Sounds like there are some real good HS coaches in the area. Should be some real exciting races in WA state in the next few years.

Owen does have the benefit of doing this race on Thursday afternoon. Most of the greats within the last decade had to run the 1600 in the middle of the day Saturday, typically after doubling back from either the 3200 or the 800
Still very impressive, one of the best sophomore wins in track since Joe Hardy in the 3200 in 2012.
I used to race Andy in High School. God, this makes me feel old.
Owen and vince are gonna have alot of great duels. I believe they are now 2 and 2 this track season. I guess the 3200 on saturday is for all the chips.
Also Andy Powell was there like doesnt he have a west regional to coach

😂 same. Look how old the footage of the dual with Sanchez looks. Feels like a fifty year old film:

Actually, no because the UW men had the day off on Thursday at regionals, and I’m sure he had his assistants supervise the workouts yesterday.
Don’t be surprised if he’s at the meet Saturday (the UW men are done Friday night) to watch Owen run the 3200. Also, he’s there to look at his incoming freshmen, Cruize Corvin & Will Schneider.

So it was a 1600? So a 4:09 mile? Interesting....Because that's what his dad Andy ran as a sophomore in high school indoors.
It was in Tacoma, at Lincoln Bowl, at night. People went crazy
Didn’t Andy run a then soph record 4:07 for the mile at indoor nats in 97?
Wonder if Owen will equal or better that in the coming weeks.

Edit: looks like 4:09 as sophomore and 4:07 was as a junior.
