I can't say I'm super surprised, but it's a bummer! Eric showed a lot of upside and versatility, and he was a really fun personality in the sport. Wishing him the best.
I also appreciated his candor around the Alberto stuff in the interview. Not totally sure how I feel about him becoming a Citius contributor in retirement...
LRC Update: Friendly reminder, please try to link to sources you cite. Here is the interview where he announces his retirement.
13:07 and 27:22 yet many would term his running career a disappointment. We should all have such disappointing running careers. Well congrats on having had a very good running career and good luck on your future endeavors.
Great dude. After NCAAs in 2015 he posted a pic on his insta of him like 7 shots deep neckin' with some barfly at Taylor's. Funniest post I've ever seen. Dude had wheels too.
Someone said his career was a disappointment. I hope they meant pro career. Not many Americans win two NCAA distance titles. What do we think of his pro career? Only made 1 Worlds teams, no Olympics. Is that disappointing for a two-time NCAA champ? I'd like to see a list of all of the American NCAA distance champs since 2000 and how they did at pros.
Maybe that would be a good article for our new intern to write.
The disappointing thing about Jenkins is he ran his outdoor PB the summer of his senior college season and never ran faster as a pro outdoors and only slightly indoors. Very unusual for an athlete to never improve as a pro.
Yeah I always work hard, gotta get it in Cause I don't want this average lifestyle to settle in Famous is something I ain't never been Coming up to your front door, music let me in Some nights you don't ever wanna end I know my life is about to begin Not a doubt in my mind that I'm different bro A guy just trying to sing on a different note Yeah I know that my life was good before But now that I met you I can't let you go, no A good heart but a bad boy spitting past my adenoids Trying to get this face up in the tabloids I know it might sound ridiculous but this idea's syphilis Can't get rid of it, this is life and I'm living it Gifted with running real fast then spitting it Kicking it, yeah let me do my own thing I'm looking and feeling higher than Yao Maze I need you right now, we can do it all together when the sun goes down I'm just trying to flow, all I really know Is right now I just can't let you go, go, go Can't go, go, go Can't go, go, go
Yeah, I always hit the ground running, the miles, no disdain From Heyward magic, making Worlds, and Wanamaker miles I stayed in my lane I laced up my spikes, hit the track, a love insane Became a distance dawg at Northeastern, chasing that runner's dream But transferred to Oregon, where competition streamed Battles with Ches, like cheese, we churned the cream. NCAA titles, All-American, worn on my vest, Cross country runner-up, I was the hare among the rest. Nike saw my speed, put my endurance to the test, 7:38 in 3K, 13:05 in 5K, sub 3:50 mile, I outran the best of the best. Now it's time to slow my pace, body cries to maintain, The grueling strides, the lactic acid rain, Grateful for the finish lines, friendships, no pain, no gain, Never imagined starting this race having so much to attain. Eric Jenkins, the long-distance ace, bids farewell to the track, But Ricky Rocksford, ain't falling off the rack. I'll contribute to Citius Mag, no skill I lack, Weaving tales through beats, keeping it on the comeback track. Stepping into a new heat, switching up my tempo, Running may be over, but my passion's still crescendo. With lyrics and beats, I'll let my wordplay glow, Ricky Rocksford's here, ready to go toe-to-toe. Yeah, life was good in the runner's shoes, that's true, But now I'm on the mic, spinning something fresh and new, No longer chasing Olympic gold, it's a different view, But through it all, my drive, my pace stays true. So let's keep the BPM high, let the rhythm flow, Ricky Rocksford's here, ready to steal the show, Grateful for the miles, but the verses are where I grow, Running, rhyming, writing, I'm ready to blow. Can't let go of the dreams, the goals in my queue, Through retirement and transition, I'm getting my due. Eric Jenkins, the runner, Ricky Rocksford, the crew, This is just the warm-up, there's so much more to accrue.
Sad to see that. Raced against him in college, he had a pretty incredible transformation from a solid freshman 1500m runner to suddenly a 13:18 guy. Enjoyed following his career, wish he could've stayed injury free because he was a heck of a talent.
I can't say I'm super surprised, but it's a bummer! Eric showed a lot of upside and versatility, and he was a really fun personality in the sport. Wishing him the best.

I was thinking about this after I read he retired. It kind of reminds me of a Heisman Trophy winner who doesn't pan out in the NFL. Situations like that.
was a former teammate of mine at NU. treated everyone with respect, humor, and dignity no matter how fast you were or weren't. always admired the humility with which he raced and treated his successes.
