I think Rob Finnerty of Burnsville, MN had that record until recently at 9:06. (Sophomore 3200). I think he took it from Webb.
I would guess that’s a national record.
Not even close. Lex Young ran 8:43 as a sophomore, Cole Sprout was in the 8:40s, Leo Young 8:55, Aidan Puffer and Gavin Sherry both sub 9s just off the top of my head and a bunch more in recent years. I doubt 9:06 is even in the top 100 Sophomore times ever

…and Recupero this year 8:47
However, State should be fast. Everybody now knows that Noonan can close in 56 off a 9:00 pace. Other runners will not let that happen again. They will at least try to keep the pace honest.

Yeah but the flip side of that is now Noonan knows it too.
Watching the race video from yesterday you can almost sense his tentativeness over the first 5-6 laps, not fully going with the leaders early on.
I’m also curious what your idea of an honest pace is? Parra took them through in 4:26 which is about as honest as it gets for a bunch of 8:50 to 8:55 kids. Especially when most of those marks were run in early April at Arcadia.
Sophomore class in CA is really stacking up. Evan Noonan, Westin Brown, Stefanopoulos , and there’s also one to not forget - Broen Holman Lots of sophomores on the girls side too

You may be right.
Only Parra has a faster PB (8:46) and not by much…
They might as well simply give Noonan the gold.
It would be nice to see if he could go sub 8:45 however. What is the Soph record?
I think Carter Spradling (4:07/8:50) will give him a good test. He can finish strong as well, but not quite that fast. And if the weather is good, I think Para goes out even faster at the state meet, so that might equalize the kicks a little bit.
