Yes, long Covid is real.

Defining it is hard, and continuing. There will be borderline cases. Some people will fake it. Stuff like this happens with novel diseases in the real world. Sorry, it won't be possible to give a bright-line yes/no for every case. (To paraphrase H.L. Mencken: For every complex problem, there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.)

But long Covid is still a real thing that affects some people. Some of those suffering from it, though impaired, are able to return to work; others are not.

I got covid in June 2022, and have had repeated bouts of coughing since. I've been diagnosed as having asthma (which seems highly dubious to me, after a lifetime of running and no prior symptoms), have come to use an inhaler a couple times a day, and haven't really felt right since catching covid. I'm retired, so it's hard to say what the impact on my ability to work would have been, but I know that my running and my mileage have suffered. So, yeah, I've become a believer there is long covid, and that it damaged my lungs.

Yes, same as a lot of viruses. The flu does the same thing, can really damage your health and not that uncommon. And with Covid you have virtually everyone getting infected, some repeatedly, so the odds of a decent number of folks having issues just stack up.

You just have to mentally separate the people who got a little too into covid-as-personality (online long-coviders) from normal people.

One of the truly sad things about letsrun is that we have been unable to have a serious discussion about how to help runners recover from covid and long covid. Every time someone asks a serious question about covid/long covid/vaccine damage, the thread gets hijacked.

I had (I think) covid in Jun 2020 and again, for sure, in January 2022. The first time, I had trouble breathing for three months. I guess that might qualify as long covid, although I was almost complete asymptomatic in other symptoms. Interestingly, it stopped almost immediately when I friend recommended that I start taking Cordyceps.

Asthma can be triggered by a viral infection…especially one your body has never seen before.
If you are really concerned COVID ‘damaged your lungs’ you need to get a CT scan and PFTs to see if you have residual inflammation or fibrosis from COVID (maybe this was already done?).

As far as ‘long COVID’ i wouldn’t put you in that category because it sounds like you have an objective disease.

What most people call long-COVID is a constellation of nonspecific symptoms that could occur after any viral infection or pneumonia. some of these people, in my experience, may have secondary gain for having such a condition. some also may be under stress and their ‘long-COVID’ symptoms are somatization of mental stress. not everyone, but many IMO

Myth. Just like squirting. Both have been factually debunked through actual scientific testing.

There is nothing to debate.

My brother has long covid. Not fun. He almost committed suicide due to the symptoms (heart racing and palpitations, body aches, major weakness, cramping, etc.) not getting better. 1.5 years later and he is about 80% better and able to return to work on light duty. It's definitely real and definitely not the flu.
