Small meet at UVA today and Rocky Hansen raced the mile after winning the DMR with his team at Penn Relays earlier in the weekend. Ran a 3:59.56. Yet another sub 4 high schooler.
And he won the race too with a huge effort all the way through the line! Decent splits and couldn’t ask for more perfect weather. 30 mins before the race it was spitting rains and the winds were swirling but by the gun the clouds had passed and BAM!
The first section also had a speedy effort from a high schooler, ran 4:05 all by himself.
Don’t overlook UVA with another runner under 4 this year, Jack Eliason, who did much of the work on that 3rd lap in Rocky’s big race.

While Hansen deserves congratulations we shouldn't overlook Tinoda Matsasa's 4:05.68 in 9th. That's a big mile improvement for him and he already ran 1:48 & change indoors so Georgetown is getting someone with lots of upside.

Thanks for pointing out Matsasa winning the other heat all by himself. The 9th place I mentioned was in the overall standings.

very true. He's definitely one of the most promising mid-d guys in the class. Unlucky he didn't get put in the fast heat here or he might have run even better.

Lots of differences, of course (ages: 25 and 18, shoes and track: ¾ inch spikes and cinders vs super shoes and all-weather, etc.). Still, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” And, if it’s any consolation to young Eliason, Chataway went on to become the world record holder at 5,000 meters.
