Gabby Thomas improved her personal best to a massive 49.68 seconds to win 400m at 2023 Texas Invitational on Saturday. She completed the 200 and 400m double.
I feel like this deserves more attention. Obviously her ceiling in the 400m should be high due to her 200m PB; nonetheless, it's great to have another sub-50 runner for the Team USA 4x4.
Honestly if she keeps progressing, if Sydney and Britton have a strong season, and if Athing/Steiner/Diggs can go 49.x, they have a legitimate shot at the WR.
Absolutely. This is a huge result for Thomas. I was thinking that Steiner was the heir apparent to Allyson Felix in terms of ranginess but I’ll give Thomas the nod now. At 400 & 200, I’ll give Gabby the nod over Abby. At 100 they’re probably about even.
It’s very close, but the takeaway to me is both should stop pretending that they are viable in the open 100. It’s fine if they want to use it early in the season to work on things (or get a spot on the 4x1), but if they’re looking to double it should be upwards. Neither of them is going to do what Shericka Jackson or Fred Kerley has.
I also dislike Jakob's tattoos, but he acts completely normal.
If Shacarri would act normal, people wouldn't criticize her. Are there any other black runners, or runners in general, who would act like she did on the plane? For example, can you see Mu or McLaughlin acting like that?

Oh, I know who Abby is. I'm a big fan but not a fanboy.
As I said, until someone proves otherwise, Thomas is still the top 200 woman in the States if she gets back to her old form.
To my knowledge, Abby & Gabby have race head to head exactly one time and if was last year in the USATF Championship when Gabby was injured. Before Thomas was injured she ran 21.61 for the #3 time ever by an American woman & the #6 time ever in the world. Steiner's best is 21.77 for the #13 time ever by an American woman.
I'm highly anticipating a Gabby vs Abby 200 duel this season. Many sprinting fans are.

When I first read "Gabby Thomas runs massive 49.68..." I expected to see that it was a click-baity title for a TRP video. Solid and surprising, but hardly "massive." Let's save that language for women that dip below 49.
Well, allowing two missed tests in twelve months is a lax rule in my estimation. I think it should be tightened to allow only one miss in twelve months.

Unlike your name, you aren't a straight shooter. The title said "Gabby Thomas rusn massive 49.68 PB". You purposely left off the "PB" part. The title is true. It's a really big PB for her.
For some reason you decided to be a non-straight shooter and twist it to say that the title was saying that the 49.68 was massive and that's not what the title was saying at all.
Go back to being a straight shooter and stop twisting things around.
