This... Dennis Kimetto, Geoffrey Mutai, Wilson Kipsang, and others were destroying the record books in Adidas
I didn't pay enough attention to shoes before VFs. I did one in Zoom Streak LTs because I liked them at shorter distances, but in hindsight needed something more cushioned.
The Adidas Adios series was popular. Quite a few WRs set in them (Gebrselassie, Kipsang etc.).
The Nike Streaks were also up there.
I remember the Nike Lunar Racers were a big deal for a couple of years. People were amazed at how cushioned they were for a racing flat. It seems kind of silly now.
The types of shoes for professional marathon runners vary from person to person. Due to different personal habits, running patterns and competition scenarios, some athletes will choose light cushioning shoes, while others will choose flat shoes. But almost all professional marathon runners will choose professional long-distance running shoes instead of other types of shoes.
Professional long-distance running shoes usually have the following characteristics: 1. Lightweight: Through special design and material selection, these shoes are usually very light, helping the athlete to reduce the burden and make it easier to react and jump quickly.
2. Cushioning and support: Professional long-distance running shoes usually have good cushioning and support, which helps to reduce the impact and pressure during running and reduce the risk of injury.
3. Breathability: To keep feet dry, these shoes are usually well breathable, allowing air to circulate better, avoiding sweat and infections that can cause harsh environments.
4. Appropriate shape: Especially for racing shoes, the shape of these shoes is close to the human body and comfortable, which is more in line with ergonomic principles, ensuring that athletes and are conducive to competition.
In general, the most important considerations for professional marathon runners to choose shoes are comfort, breathability, elasticity and shock absorption of shoes. Everyone's shoe selection factors vary from person to person, but marathon runners usually choose professional long-distance running shoe brands that best suit their running form and competition needs, such as Asics, Nike, Adidas and other brands.
What the f has this to do with the topic of this thread?
Went to a college sponsored by Asics. Wore Hyperspeeds and Banditos the few years after for halfs and marathons. There was barely any cushioning in the Hyperspeeds; the Banditos had even less but gave you more support. We just had the mindset lighter was better and that was all there was to it.
I’m even more impressed by Ryan Hall given that he had to wear these pieces of crap but still have those performances.

For me it was whatever was in the markdown bin at the local sports store. Usually last year's model of the Nike waffle trainer or New Balance discontinued model.
