I opened LetsRun this morning to see “Kipchoge is doping” emblazoned across my screen. After a double-take, I realized that it was just the middle part of a “super hot” thread that was only accusing him of doping.
What other sport does this? As far as I’m aware, there is no evidence that Kipchoge is doping. We have in-competition testing, out-of-competition testing (which has caught a lot of Kenyans recently). We have the ABP making it much harder to cope and get away with it. We have the AIU catching dopers from all over the world. And we sometimes even have governmental investigations and raids.
I’m NOT saying that Kipchoge or anyone else must be clean. But you have a sport that’s really putting in effort to catch dopers, unlike pretty much every team sport. All the testing also means that those who do manage to dope can’t possibly get the same advantage they would otherwise. If someone passes all these tests for many years, again with no evidence of impunity or cover-ups, can we agree not even to stop talking about whether athletes like this are doping, but just to stop blaring it on the front page.
Maybe have a single thread where we can discuss doping chances and accusations for any athlete at all with no evidence against them needed. Once there is evidence implicating an athlete, it can be discussed in other threads. But I just don’t see what the purpose of this all-consuming level of evidence-free speculation, which often takes the form of sneering cynicism (“how could you not realize he’s doping?”) is.
