Italian runner found dead ripped apart by brown bear on trail. Apparently Italy has a population of a few hundred brown bears. I never understood people who hike or run alone on trails in bear country. Two people are always a must and one has to carry pepper spray, two being preferable. I wouldn’t go hiking in bear trails without a companion and pepper spray and a shotgun.
Only trails I’ve ever felt nervous running were in the backcountry of Montana near Glacier. Grizzly bears don’t play. 4th of July weekend there a Glacier park ranger got chased down and killed while riding his mountain bike.
Bear spray is much more effective against bears than guns are. Additionally, bear spray is much harder to injure others unintentionally, lighter and cheaper, easier to use, and less dangerous to the bear than guns are.
Why would one use a gun when one could use bear spray?
Why use bear spray or a gun when you can wield a hefty bear spear?
A properly wielded bear spear is pretty much invincible. The bear pretty much only knows how to charge forward, and will impale itself on the well-braced pike, or be fended off.
Italians have been using spears for combat since ancient times and should have no trouble dispatching a bear with one.
If people would stop encroaching on the bear habitat and forests there would be no problem. Bears have a right to live, too. And they're so beautiful. And they understand what we're doing.

FOOL!!! It is spring. Bear's out of hibernation. Momma bear with cubs she will protect to the death for any, and all, fools. Runner has to run his normal trail to log his distance properly. RIP, runner, or hiker.
I have run and hiked trails for years. Avoid far away from bear territory during springs. Learn to look for droppings (bear, cougar, bobcat...). Snakes are easy to deal with; stomping and yelling at them does nothing -- a few handfuls of dust, light tossed towards them will get them to move away in any direction you want -- they can't stand dust in their eyes.

I've run there many times and I have never in hundreds of miles seen a bear. I would not run with bear spray and the idea of running with a "shotgun" is too stupid to even entertain.
BTW. Over the last 50 years, millions of climbers, tourists, trail runners, and other athletes have hiked and run in the Dolomites and this is the first guy who has been killed. I think I like those odds.
p.s. I will be racing a trail race there later this year and I have 0.0% concern of being killed by a bear. If anything, I will be killed by a car or off-leash pit-bull before then just trying to get my training miles in!
I lived in a city that's half redneck and half ghetto. Off leash pit bulls were everywhere and most weren't well trained - I had to keep my runs limited to a very small part

I do it all the time. Far more likely I will die in auto accident driving to the trail or auto accident driving back from trail running or walking.
Such a weak overused lazy argument... the more likely to die in car accident. It has zero connection to swimming with sharks, running with bears etc. Now if you were on a trail and you came across 50 grizzles and they were all less than a few feet from you during your entire run . That would be the same as driving to the trail likelihood of death comparison
