David Ribich Steeple Debut

For a guy who ran 7:44 a couple months ago, 9:00 shows that the steeple isn't his event. Back to the flat events.

Tbh he's a good 50/50 on the women's side. For every world finalist (Rogers, Johnson, Hull) there's at least one athlete stagnating at best or worse they are/were pre retirement running times that wouldn't be competitive vs college runners (Efraimson, Hasay, Meyer, Donaghu, Osika, Keegan - though maybe too early on the latter).

It's almost a coin toss.

Ribich probably knows he has zero chance at making the 1500 or 5k teams. Steeple was literally his only path to making an Outdoor team. All he needs to do is get about 50 seconds faster and he has a shot.

His form is horrible. That's his current hangup in the steeple. How much will that improve over time is anyone's guess. His fitness didn't look great either, but I'd attribute that mostly to the very poor hurdling technique and possibly training through. I could easily see if him going 8:39-8:45 by the end of the season. Maybe substantially faster next year?...🤞

I was a 3:4x guy in college and ran the steeple one time at the first meet of the season and ran very close to that in my debut and I am not even in the same stadium as that guy in terms of talent. Thats very bad for him

My first steeplechase was 8:52 as a 4:08/8:55 (mile/2mile) freshman.

Probably because he doesnt train hard or a lot.

Im baffled by how little some "pro" runners in America is training. I know talent is talent and some get buy doing "what works for them", see Wightman and Kerr (which sacrifices doubles because is by his own words "lazy").

Compare it to other sports..Running takes barely no time and is probably one of the easiest sports to compare with a full or part time job. Gotta listen to Jakob Inge when he talks about this, he laughs and asks why they are barely training. Wightman beat him so..but the argument is still fair. Any thoughts on this malmo? Know you trained a lot. Whats the deal with runners being so lazy, culture?

Too many "hardworkers" run themselves into the ground and don't achieve due to injury and burnout. Thus the runners that do make it to the top tend to be more on the side of undertraining, relying on their talent a bit more.

Jakob is an exception but most can't train as hard as him for long. His brothers are both no longer world class due to injury cycles. Jakobs struggles this indoor season worry me but hopefully he can be back to full health and fitness for outdoors.

Disagree. Training a lot is the same as training hard.

Jakob doesnt train very "hard" at all. I think most US distance runners would feel they train harder, especially the Bowerman group.

With supershoes, not increasing volume is the same as decreasing your training load. Jakob is not an exception, most good distance runners throughout history _has_ had double workouts and high milage. The best US runners tend to do the same. The 1500m is a bit different as you can approach it more from the speed side, but generally its volume based runners being best here.

Sorry, mean to say: "Traing a lot is not the same as training hard" (or running yourself into the ground).

As an add on: Its more than running one can do to improve.

Add on regarding brothers: Henriks injuries mostly come from doing actually that, training too hard. Filip has been weak healthwise all his life.

What do you mean when you say that Ribich and other Americans don’t train hard or a lot? Bowerman and the OAC would disagree. Most of these folks are running 90-110 miles a week. There are plenty of people that run more but few get the same results as Bowerman or OAC. Some would disagree but 90-110 isn’t nothing…

They are not the norm, is my impression. Or, more like, I feel its surprisingly many pros who dont train a lot. Take Brooks, have you looked at their training? So many of them who train for 1500+ has pretty low milage. Fine, Kerr doesnt train that much and it works for him, but most cant do that. How are they supposed to beat JI or Africans running twice a day every week, by talent? 90-100 miles is not that much if youre a strenght based runner btw. With the supershoes that feels like 120km (75 miles) and is far from say JI. Its really not a lot, people do that with full time jobs.

The first water jump shows he has potential as long as he fixes form. He has no coordination right now whatsoever.

Haha, no coordination but "has potential". Didnt see the race, is it on youtube? 9.00 is really poor, did he go out too hard?
