Friendly, reminder, you are talking about a real person who very well may read this. I've written up that summarizes the key points that he said on the podcast.
What the New Zealand article fails to mention is that Zane appears to be suicidal. He talked about wanting to end his life 3 or 4 times on the podcast.
If anyone is suicidal, please dial or text 988 in the US. We have the international suicide numbers in the article.

Wow. TBH, a bit refreshing to get a pretty straight forward confession. It sounds like he was just desperate for some kind of “good thing” and needed race winnings. I get it, but man, what a sucky situation all around.
I wonder if many of the recent positive results are a result of economic desperation due to the lack of opportunities from the pandemic.
However, I lost respect for him when he said his ex-wife spend years convincing him to do it, and bought EPO for him (in Ethiopia I might add).
Zane then left it in the fridge for months, then moved to Kenya, unpacked his stuff, noticed he still had it, then months later, when he was at a downpoint remembered that he still had the EPO his ex-wofe bought him and used it.
I don't doubt that his divorce was messy, but does he really expect us to believe that story when Zane could just ask 80% of guests staying at his guest house and he'd have EPO in his system within 5 minutes?
The man needs to stop talking. Was given EPO, knew it was EPO, kept it in his fridge, moved country, took the EPO with him, put it into a new fridge to protect it, used said EPO. That’s not a moment of weakness by an anti-doping campainer, that is someone who had multiple oppotunities to do the right thing and chose not to.
He demonstrated that he’s a selfish man child. Said he knew how it would affect his brother and sister-in-law, but did it anyway. Also told the reader that - hey, you’d do the same thing if you were in my shoes! No Zane, I wouldn’t throw some innocent health care workers under the bus to save my @ss so that I can keep cheating. F you, man.
Kudos to him for the very honest interview. He said he was on the brinck of suicide so I don't think there is any reason to shame him. He's life is hard enough at this point anyway.
And yes I reckognize that he cheated and he got 8 years ban.
This is what Shelby should be doing instead of peddling the ridiculous burrito story. Even Floyd came good in the end. I have way more sympathy for the dopers that admit it, especially if the testify against the teams and sport.
"I've been taking EPO out of competition for many years. I've recently been under more pressure to run fast times, leading me to take it before I raced to get the biggest advantage possible, and got caught"
Many people here need to have some compassion. When you are in a very dark place, and you strongly associate your life with running, doping can seem like a way to save your life. Sounds like he was dealing with financial troubles as well as a divorce. Anyone who has been in a dark place before knows that they think of everything else they can try as a last resort before the *final option*. Obviously this was a stupid mistake on his part, he made his training partners, athletes he coached, brother, and family all look bad. But we are only human. I'm not justifying doping here, but most top athletes have at least thought of going over to the dark side before. Only he knows if he truly did it once or for most of his career, all we can do is look at the facts rather than speculate.

As an aging athlete who is currently running about 2:30-3:00 per mile slower than in my youth, I can understand why an aging world class athlete would give in to the temptation. Personally, I wouldn't want to:
1. Cheat
2. Put my health at risk with these drugs.
I understand giving in to the pressure but that doesn't make it right. His reputation is shot and it puts his brother's at risk.
About to read it but there’s nothing he could say to change my mind about him. If anyone believes a word he says, you’re an idiot. See lance armstrong. I’ll report back if he changes my mind… he won’t
