You need to look at the whole picture. Does that state have no state income tax, low or no sales tax? If a state is missing out on income in one area, they often need to compensate in another.

I don’t need to look at the big picture when I’m buying a vacation home. I just need to look at the property tax rate. Even sales tax is largely irrelevant—I can make most large purchases in my home state. I guess that might be inconvenient for appliances and solar panels…

You need to look at the whole picture. Does that state have no state income tax, low or no sales tax? If a state is missing out on income in one area, they often need to compensate in another.

That’s why Florida has one of the worst budget deficits in the country. They spend the most and pile up the most debt. On the other hand, CA has had a budget surplus ever year for at least several years. Unfortunately, the federal government allows Florida to run up massive debt and then takes CA’s money to subsidize the debt.
California’s budget deficit is projected to be $24 billion. Florida’s is a $21.8 billion surplus. There’s a reason why Florida is gaining population and California is losing it…by the way, it’s not exactly popular to propose reparations in a 95% non black state and to allow homeless to be lawless.
Florida has a low wage economy and education spending is near the bottom in the country. Meanwhile, Dictator DeSatan tried to create a private militia beholden only to himself, to create libel laws that outlaw criticism of himself, and to fire anyone who mentions some topic he decided was forbidden or disagrees with him, whether teachers or data scientists, prosecutors or school board members. He is as corrupt as it gets, literally auctioning off seats on boards of trustees for universities to the highest political donors and rewarding favorable legislators with cushy, overpaid university and college presidencies. Richard Corcoran went from the legislature to education secretary to New College presidency, where he gets paid $1k per student, plus bonuses, $700,000 for a 700 student college.

Sounds like maybe a California home purchased a long time ago. My parents bought their house in 1976 for $110K. It's now worth $2.3M but is taxed on that $110K+ 2% max per year for inflation. The next owner of the house (if not children of the owners=me and my siblings) will have to pay 20x what my parents pay in property tax.
