Ben True rip's the half, don't seem to get the recognition around here he's due. Powerhouse of a runner. Took the time to talk with me one year in Boston, so I'll always respect him for that. Come on Rupp, it's not over yet.
Hats off to Ben True! Awesome runner. I love it that he is still getting after it!
Honestly, if Ben True can't get paid (enough) to run on the roads, and is not able to make teams on the track, and cross country isn't viable as a career, I think he should go the Max King route:
Get sponsored by North Face and/or Red Bull and race trail races and ultras and become a superstar of that sport. I'd rather make $180,000 running for Salomon than try to piece together prize money on the roads.
Glen Rop will and needs to milk his career until he's 40. For the money and the enjoyment. He's in a rut now but when you've been running for a couple decades, the valleys are as inevitable as the peak. He just needs to get out of the injury cycle and hone his athleticism like he did when he ran ARs under Salazar. I certainly give him credit for showing up and finishing which is a hell of a lot more than most of the other American pros would be willing to do considering they duck races and competitors like a full-time occupation.
Well, I have always liked True. Seems smart and ran some exciting races where he showed promise. I think he hit his ceiling. impressive he got that much out of himself.
Ben True - Letsrun’s favorite runner to never make the Olympics
Letsrun will sh*t on guys running 13:0x 5,000m’s these days yet think Ben true is the best American “blue collar” distance runner ever l, even though he ran the same times. If True was a better runner, he’d have been on Salazar or Schumacher’s team and the blue collar tag would never have existed. Letsrun only likes the potential of “blue collar” runners, not their results.
This isn't written in stone YET. Based on this result you have to believe he is a contender to make the 2024 Olympic team in the marathon. Trials are less than a year away.
Rupp could be an ambassador for the sport much like Rogers was back in the day.
I remember when road racing was bigger (in the 80's especially) you would rub elbows with the invited elite after the race in the food tent.
That brought the sport to the people and made the elites more popular/well known.
I remember having a real conversation with Jerry Kiernan at at 5K. He was about 40. But we were talking about his debut marathon in Dublin. I read an article in Runner magazine and he said it was like I was at the race (the article was so well written).
Big fan of Ben True. The guy is always right there mixing it up. His 6th at world cross in 2013 is arguably his greatest race. Hope he finds a way onto the Olympic marathon team next year.
Ben is a great runner, and we know he's clean. It's unfortunate that the marathon trials were set for hot/humid flat, looped course. That doesn't favor him at all. A cooler hilly course would be better for him.

Well, that 13:02 was long before super spikes. Today that would've been 12:5X, which goes to show he easily could have been on a top team had he wanted to -- but he didn't.
Rupp was in the lead group to halfway or just after, right? So he ran 6 minute pace after that.
He's in the same twilight Farah is, showing up now and then and proving to be an elite hobbyjogger. True excites us because what else are we going to do? Roads is no longer a thing, we can't hang at the true WMM races, and world XC ran by a decade ago.

After 5th in 5K in 2016 and 4th in the 10K in 2021, he is due for a 3rd place in the marathon in 2024!

If i remember correctly, it was said Rupp is still coming back from injury and was just hoping to do well. Not necessarily be in the mix to be a top finisher. Why are you $hi++ ing on him? He went out there and races as he’s still building fitness. He was honest with himself and in the interview. Wtf do you want?
