Pump the breaks on the outrage. He could be stepping back due to health or family reasons. Maybe he has just had enough and would like a successor in place before retirement.

I am basically the "director of track and field" at my high school, and believe me, there are many times when I dream about my days of only having to work with the distance kids. Especially because I got to work under a guy who trusted me and thought similarly to me strategically.

If I ever find somebody who I think can do as well as me or better, it is very realistic that I would step back to my previous role.

It still wouldn't make sense. Hoppler is going to get a pay cut when he might need more money for medical bills? Most directors have their staff do the majority of the work - such as planning travel, recruiting, meet management.

Why not make Casey Carroll director? He's been there 25 years.

Too bad he's also an arse. He used to coach men's and women's distance - then Casey had to coach men this year since Hoppler became Hitler.

Casey might not have wanted the director role; he's pretty lowkey. Reminds me of a kind uncle who just lurks around whenever I see him at track meets.

From what I know they lost whoever was coaching their men's team and he had to take over both. Did not care at all about the men's athletes, would tell them their workouts day of, didn't tell them what splits to run but would yell at them if they were off, would "miscount" reps and have them do 3-4 extra sometimes, among other things. This obviously resulted in lots of conflict with the men and I know one case got very verbally abusive and resulted in the athlete immediately transferring. Some of his top women tried speaking up for the men and he threatened them with I believe indefinite redshirting or something unless they backed off.

Regardless of the specifics of this particular case, I personally have known multiple head coaches/directors who stepped back/stepped down voluntarily.

If you're secure enough financially, it can be wonderful to be able to devote most of your time at work to actually coaching, and not having to deal with the paperwork and other organizational BS to which a head coach generally devotes a majority of his/her time.

Probably just taking a step back, a lot of the coaches in that conference are starting to enter retirement. Their rival UMaine's coach just retired last year.

According to runcruit.com, UNH women's cross country has a 35% retention rate from freshman to senior year. Men's is 45%. That's a lot of folks who either quit running or transferred out.

What else is going on at UNH? It looks like they are not hosting any outdoor track meets. Is the administration treating track well? If they are trying to be low budget, his may be a way to keep Anna by getting her to a livable salary. UNH used to have three head coaches: Hoppler XC, Casey Women, Boulanger Men.

They have very few transfers in the portal over the past 4 years, mostly graduate transfers. This goes directly against many of the allegations and the stats on that random website.

Both Carroll and Hoppler no longer have a head coach title in any sport. It's just strange. If they were doing a bad job, why didn't they just get fired?

You guys sound very disgruntled. Perhaps you should transfer to U Lowell also.

Purrier seemed to only have good things to say about him. Donegan was a 3x All American and won 5 conference championships in a row in cross.
