No, you have, among others, Cook and Tuohy ahead of her as well, but you missed the World Jr. XC 10th or 11th, which is a big part of her case.

She still has outdoor and her full Sr year to get there, but I'd put her at #5 now behind also Efraimson and Tuohy. Win an xc national title and get 1 of the distance record and we are in better shape.

Efraimson was faster, but even xc monster Tuohy still had better track times; 4:33, 9:01, 15:37.

She'll be far better than Tuohy by the end of her senior year. In fact, she's better now

Efraimson was definitely a better miler but her 3000 is only 2 seconds faster than Shea. Also consider that Efraimson's 4:32 was fresh while Shea's 4:40 was following two straight days of races, a 2-mile and a 5K.

Shea has already run faster than Tuohy ever ran for 2-miles and her 3000 is only 0.2 slower. Tuohy's 5K was as a sophomore and she never improved.

I think if Shea gets into a college 5000 race like Cook did at Stanford and has people to pull her along, Cook's 15:25 is going to go down. Maybe not this season, but next year.

Keep in mind what I said -- she will LEAVE HS as the third best ever behind the two Marys. She might be still behind a couple more right now but she still has over a year to go.

I think it's amazing what she did, but I don't think she should've run the mile. Wining the 5K & the 2 mile made enough of a statement on it's own: I didn't see any male distance athletes running more than 2 events. If she wanted to run a mile to tune-up her speed, she could've another mile race when she was fresher and gotten a better time: she should've done a double like Tuohy did at NCAA nationals.
I hope Shea has 20+ more years of a running career; why push yourself so much at age 16 and risk the frustration of an injury. RUN SENSIBLE. Like I said, winning the 5K and 2-mile at that level already made a statement!

Tuohy is a New Yorker. I’d be surprised if she raced the 2-mile more than once

Shea is old for her grade. Her world junior eligibility is done next year.

How old do you think HS seniors are? She turns 18 during her senior year, like probably 95% of seniors.

She turns 18 at the beginning of Sept. Most seniors don't turn 18 until the second semester or the summer after graduating high school.

Was her mother suppossed to hold her in for a few months? Or did you want her parentsnto petition to have her start early?

Neither. The fact is, she is probably one of the oldest students in her high class.

Tuohy ran one 5000m her entire high school career in a regular high school race when she set the record. Two 5000m NCAA titles later and I would say she improved since.

Tuohy maybe ran two 2 milers her whole high school career back when they took place after she already ran the relays at NB and a week after the NY Indoor state championships. She never did the whole super track/ elite race circuit of Arcadia, Brooks, BU, etc. Obviously never ran on the NB Boston track. Never ran with supershoes either. But Tuohy's high school resume was incredibly impressive.

Some of the top high school runners today seem to have a much more pro-like approach going from elite race to elite race. Whatever works.
