BU Last Chance on Sunday 2/26: American/NCAA (and World?) Record Attempts in Mile

With all due respect these heats are kinda bizarre. Hopefully common sense prevails and they have the sub-3:53 guys in one heat and the slower guys (including pros) in another. The only guys in the fast heat who belong are Teare and Wynne.

Playing this out seeing Teare run 3:48-49, Wynne run 3:51 then a bunch of 3:54+ is going to look weird when the next heat has 8 guys between 3:49 and 3:52.

Oh I agree. Seems like Andy Powell's guys wanted to stick together. But if you want best v best, you'd have a mix of the athletes from heat 1 and heat 2.

How sharp is Cooper Teare? I don't recall any indoor results for him this year (he ran 3:50 the last two years) and another of Jerry's kids, Grant Fisher, wasn't sharp relative to his standards in his first race indoors this year.

Gotcha. I kinda wonder if they should put them all in heat 1 with a second pacer a la Grijalva for the collegiate record. Sorry Ciattei, Jager, Reed Brown, CPT and so on you are Heat 2 material from what we’ve seen. The UW guys for the most part are provably fit.

He ran 7:34.7 at Millrose for 4th. Wasn’t there with Kerr and Grijalva in the kick but a good run. I have to think a 3:48-49 is the expectation with a 3:47 on the table with some BU magic.

And for what it's worth, that was a 5-second PR over last January.

And two weeks later he ran 3:50.17 in Chicago.

Another notable HSer is Ellie Shea in the 3000.

If Teare runs anywhere near a WR, I'll be shocked. No American is in the same tier as Goose this year.

Rocky Hansen is entered in the mile as well, and he’s 2-0 against Burns this year.

All you goons calling for the fastest guys to be thrown in one heat have clearly never run in a professional field before. With so many runners all knocking on the door of 3:50, putting everyone in one heat will result in over half the heat not running faster than 3:52 due to space on the track. Separating the faster runner benefits both groups because the faster guys will have room on the track but still enough competition and the slower guys will be able to hang on to a fast pace.

Vig uses this strategy at his Princeton invitationals especially in the 1500 when shooting for regional qualifiers and it works quite well.

teare will not run a wr. will be shocked if he even runs under 3:48. however i think he will run fast. i’ll say 3:48 high.

i think we will see a 3:49 college mile. no clue who, probably waskom if i had to guess someone.

hansen will break 4. burns will not.

Teare is attacking 3:47. The second heat has all the competitive guys minus Wynne going after 3:50. That second pack of guys at 3:49-3:53 fitness will be huge in heat 2 whether Teare is 1 second in front at 440 or not. The space on the track argument would be an issue is heat 2 but they’re all training partners so it’s presumed everyone will play nice. Whether they’re with Teare or not is irrelevant because if he’s serious he’ll go out in 56 high.

Josette Norris could steal the show.

Teare PR'd in the 3k, he was a few sec faster than last year when he ran 3:50 again. I'd say he has a good shot of 3:48-3:49

BU track banks collapse 20 minutes before the start of the meet. Winning time 3:55

Purrier did that having Konstanze Klosterhalfen basically rabbiting her for 1450m and had the added adrenaline of needing to surge to hold off a kick from Reekie. That race was ridiculous with at the time 4 of the top 8 indoor mile times in history in one race (still 4 of top 10). The male equivalent would be a race where 4 athletes went 3:49 or better.

I don't personally see Josette Andrews doing that without someone to chase well past 1000m even on BU's magic carpet. She split 1500m in Millrose in 4:03.18, closing the last 109m in 17.70s. Purrier's record split 1500 in 4:00.20 with a 16.65s last 109. Andrews needs to come through 1500 3s faster *and* also not be tying up as much.

Norris needs to basically run her outdoor PR 15 pace for 1500 and then sustain that for another 109m.

The only reason she is running in this collegiate heavy meet is because of the fast track. An easy way to get a PR. Track, shoes and X will make you faster
