I've always found the hypothetical of a track and field draft interesting. If we had professional teams choosing athletes in a draft that was similar to pre-2005 NBA (where HS athletes could be selected), which athletes would these teams pick?
For the sake of the debate, let's assume the draft is for distance athletes only (800m+) and that it takes place in July -- after NCAA's and USA's but before the Olympics/ World Champs.
Looking back, I think in 2016 the debate for the # 1 overall pick would have been contentious. To me there's a relatively clear top 4: Clayton Murphy, Craig Engels, Drew Hunter, Michael Slagowski. Here's what the 4 had accomplished at that point:
- Drew Hunter: Coming off an-all time great XC season (which ended with a runaway Footlocker title), Hunter followed it up with an even better indoor season. He ran 3:57 at Millrose, right on the heels of Johnny Gregorek. He was being comped to Alan Webb, and he was generally considered the best American prep we had seen in years. He had shown enough for Adidas to lock him into a huge 10-year deal.
- Clayton Murphy: Murphy didn't really break through until his senior season, so he probably wouldn't have entered the hypothetical draft until 2016. On paper Murphy would have probably been then #1 pick; by the draft date he had a 3:36 PR, NCAA 1500m victory, and 800m Olympic berth. But, there's a history of 22-23 guys running very well at middle distances (Andrew Wheating), before flaming out by their late 20's. I think some teams would have been concerned that Murphy was close to his peak, and that the HS'ers had more upside.
-Craig Engels: Engels would have been a massive late riser on most people's boards. He only had a PR of 3:38 heading into USA's, which barely even snuck him into the meet. But, of course, Craig had a massive breakthrough, placing 4 and 5th in the 800m and 1500m's respectively at that champs. Even though he did go back to college the following year, in this world, he would have been drafted based on what he did at the US champs. Would you have considered Engels over Hunter or Murphy based on USA's alone?
- Michael Slagowski: Slagowski would have been the most controversial guy on the board, but I think someone could have talked themselves into taking him #1. At the time, there were people saying Slagowski was more talented than Hunter (after he broke 4:00 in the mile off little training, solo), and many around here vouching that he would have the better career. In hindsight things didn't work out, but he absolutely would have been in the mix for the #1 overall pick.
Also, this year would have been Grant Fisher's freshman year (potential one and done), but I don't think he would have gone top 4 if he chose to leave college. The consensus at this point was that Hunter had surpassed Fisher, and probably wasn't as highy regarded as these 4.
Funny enough, Woody Kincaid might have fallen pretty far/ maybe even gone undrafted. He was coming off a 9th place finish in the 5000m as a 5th year senior, with a PB around ~13:30 iirc. Not many people pegged him as a big upside pro. In hindsight, him, Fisher, and Murphy would have been the clear top 3 in a re-draft depending on how you want to rank each of their accomplishments.
Did I miss anyone? Who would you have taken first in the draft for your hypothetical team?
