A mouthwatering match-up in New York with recent world XC champ Jacob Kiplimo taking on former World XC Champ and the World 10,000m Champ Joshua Cheptegei. Hellen Obiri and Molly Huddle headline the women's field.
It’s very cool. We didn’t get this last year at the Great North Run with Cheptegei’s injury. Until further notice, hard to pick anyone not named Kandie to beat Kiplimo in a Half.

If Glen Rop was in his 350 indoor mile form, this would be a banger for Americans. 57x would be in the cards. But he is well beyond that, speaking in terms of inevitable regression. So this battle is between the top dopers, cheptegai and Kiplimo with a few under the radar dopers also potentially emerging into the mix.
Pretty unexpected but the 5/10K WR holder vs HM WR holder in a month in NYC
Great matchup on paper and a big treat for US fans, but Kiplimo is going to dominate. G-d, I wish he would not bother with this and just run a marathon this spring in Boston or London. If Hassan can do it, so can Kiplimo. Doesn’t everybody want to see what he can do, even off a partial marathon build up? It wouldn’t scuttle his chance on the track this summer. We already know he’s the best at the 1/2.

Kiplimo is only 22 years old. I'm totally fine with him continuing to develop his 10k to half marathon speed another year or two and maximizing that, and then taking it to the marathon.

Not wanting him to take the roads permanently yet, but just would like to see him run in Boston or London off his current training, or with a minor short term adjustment, like Hassan is doing. If he ran a spring marathon instead of this 1/2, he would not compromise his summer track season. It would be #goodforthesport. No? He might just walk out there and be able to challenge Kipchoge. Even if he’s not quite ready, it would be super entertaining to watch him try.

It would be cool, but couldn’t he do this in Valencia without threatening his Track season? I guess the issue is that he will want to be in tiptop shape to defend his World XC crown. Another thought is after World XC in 2026, all of these guys will use the non-champs year to try out the full.

Yeah I've always assumed Cheptegei will stay on the track until at least 2025 and then move up in 2026 in the off year to test the full. He'll only be 29 then so he'd still be able to have a long marathon career. Kiplimo I'm less sure about just because how much better he's been on the roads compared to the track.

Yes, that all makes sense, but I wish the best athletes were not so conservative, and they just tried stuff. I recognize all the disincentives. I love Hassan because she’s such a wild card. Her running in London this year, but with every intention of trying to regain one or more of her world championship titles in August, is a perfect example. The sport could use more of this sort of attitude among the best of the best.

I’m fine with Kiplimo tabling a marathon debut until after World XC 2026. He’s always looked a bit hesitant and uncertain on the track. With Paris, two WCs and a stack of DLs on tap the next three years, he has an ideal stretch to sort out his track game (in his track prime), mix it up with the 1500/3000 guys on the reg and maybe become one of two men to attempt the Hassan Triple in our lifetimes. Nothing conservative about that. Fortunately, whatever path he chooses, he almost certainly will not miss Croatia and Tallahassee.
