5 years ago, a 3:55 miler coming out of college would be hot s*** looking at some decent contracts. Today that same time (or lets say a 7:46/13:22 guy) does not make you an NCAA superstar like before. Will they be getting contracts for significantly less? Comparable to a 3:58/7:54/13:35 guy from 5 years ago? or is everyone gonna get paid more

There are 3:57 guys getting money. I know one and there are "slower" runners in his group.
Sometimes I think it's a lot of luck: One 3:57/13:30 gets signed and another doesn't.

Cruz Culpeper ran 3:39/3:57 and got a pro contract before he even graduated.
There are women running 5:10 miles and guys running 4:10 on some teams where the coaches aren't interested in High school kids that fast. Times are dropping before our eyes.
Seven years ago (2016) Sean McGorty and Izaic Yorks both went 3:53 indoors. So a 3:55 was still second fiddle several years ago. I don't think those guys running 3:53 were really guaranteed the moon, either. A 3:55 guy several years ago might have gotten around $100k. Now they might get $40k and a 3:52 guy would get the $100k. You've got to actually win something to get even more money, NCAA champion with a slightly slower PR looks better than a flashy PR and 5th at NCAAs.
And because of this it doesn't make any sense to me why a company would give a high schooler a massive contract for running 3:57. You've still got to get a fair amount faster than 3:57 to truly be competitive at the national level and way better than 3:57 to be competitive at the world level.
The old pre-nil idea of signing a high schooler (Hunter, Kessler, Cain, Efraimson) was to take on a little risk by signing them early, in the hope they would turn out to later be an Olympic star. Seeing how Nuguse, Hocker, Purrier, Monson etc. improve suddenly in college is what makes the HS signing risky.
Now with nil, a brand can still bet on a HS athlete, with a bit less money, and let them prove themself in college.

I think even 40k base for a 3:55 is highly optimistic
How's their social media presence? Public speaking skills? Looks? Marketing savvy?
Businesses will invest in athletes that they expect to get a return on. Don't confuse fast with profitable. The exceptionally fast will always have a deal... the next tier is up for grabs based on money in/money out.

Seemed to work out fine with Lyles and Knighton. They may ditch the idea for distance runners and stick to sprinters.
