Does anyone have an idea of the cost of staying in one of the high altitude training camps in the Kenya? I'm thinking Iten or Eldoret. Any help much appreciated.

Leadville, CO is much cheaper.
is it really #120.00 a week? THats pretty cheap for room and board.
Eldoret will be cheaper, rent a room, 50 shilling a night and 50 shilling for lunch and dinner(100 ksh per day)equivalent to 1.25 usd).
Think about it
Hey Einstein, how much do you think that it is going to cost to fly to Kenya?

That's 120 sterling and you wouldn't need to spend another penny/cent whilst there. Flights from UK just under £400 return - that's fairly stable year round.
itain't the ritz, but that's the whole point. it would be fun to get 5 dedicated guys from a college cross country team and go there for a full summer of 100mile weeks.
I'm in.... how much money to I need to bring?
mzungu would be a much better source on here but i went to kenya for a few weeks last summer, and absolutely loved it. my flight was 1400 bucks but you can catch them cheaper than this if you play your cards right. i was actually on my running break at this time and was visiting some friends who taught there, so i only ran a couple times but i definately plan on going back in the next year or two, maybe for an extended period of time. the people are very welcoming and friendly there and always will do their best to help you out. i actually got to spend most of my time at the house of bernard barmassai, who lived next door to eliud kipchoge and had several other world class running neighbors, such as daniel komen and moses tanui. like many have mentioned, it is very cheap once you get there. normally for breakfast, i would eat some bread and butter, then drink some chai at barmassais house, then hop on the back of a bike for about 25 cents, and get a 3 mile ride into town and eat some mandazi or two and drink a krest, which would cost me under 50 cents. life is very slow and simple there and it was nice to get out of busy america. its a place i really miss and you cant beat the cool mornings and warm afternoons.
Dream on.
Why can't you live in a hostel or tent in Colorado? Why go all the way to some 3rd world shithole?
Your cell phones probably will not work there and you will have to leave the PSP at home.
Thanks for the info guys.

Last summer I lived out of tent for 3 weeks at altitude and drove to sea level for workouts.
I thought it might be fun to try out a different country.
I took a year off after high school this year for this very idea. I have about 3 000 cdn saved up so far. Is this good enough for a 2-3 month stay? I am fine with staying in a cheap training camp, if Shaheen simply needs 4 walls and a roof, who am I to ask for more. I am there to run, meet the people, and embrace the culture, not play PSP.

I'm really keen to try this out.
Anyone have any more info on locations, costs or who to get in contact with about this? Thanks again.
I'm going to Lornah Kiplagat's High Altitude Training Camp in Iten Friday. Roundtrip airfare from Raleigh, NC is about $1550. Two weeks for a room and meals is $420. Kenyan Visa and immunizations (Typhoid, Hepatitis, Tetanus, Yellow Fever) about $200. I'm anticipating spending a few hundred while I'm there on beer, souvenir's and who knows what else. Altogether it should come out to less than $2500.
You can get more info at
. I'll let you know how it went on this thread when I get back in February.

I'll be interested to hear some feedback on this as well.
I'm leaving for Djibouti very shortly and will be working in East Africa for a while (the flight and shots are free! :-)).
I'd love to get some time off and do something like this, even if I could only spare a week. My wife would like to fly over with my oldest daughter who is a HS runner and meet me there.
It sounds like a great way for her to work on her summer base while having an amazing opportunity to see Kenya.
