It's on! Ajee' Wilson now taking on Sage Hurta for 1000m American Record this weekend in New York

The record is weak. I think at least half a dozen US runners would have a shot at it. It should be broken. No idea about the current fitness of these runners. Athing Mu could break that record almost any time she wanted.

To give one an idea of how weak that record is, it is 3:51.29 1500m pace. So to run that 2:34.19 means you would be going all out for 1000m and still not quite able to run the 1500m world record pace. So several US women can do it and obviously could have done it, like Decker and SFH easily could have shattered it.

For a US man to run Hicham’s 3:26 pace for 1000m, he would have to run 2:17.33. This is obviously achievable by many US men. I see that Regina Jacobs ran 2:31.8 outdoors.

Yeah it's a weak record, who cares? Should be an exciting race regardless.

I'll take Sage for the win, just because she's likely in better shape than Ajee' right now. Apparently Ajee' is using this race to determine whether or not she's fit enough to hop into the Millrose 600 with Athing, while Sage has to be feeling confident in her fitness if she's openly billing this as a record attempt. Expecting a 2:33 high winning time.

The 1000 is a tough race. This is actually a good distance for them to meet at. Wilson is probably a little faster. Hurta probably has superior endurance. Should be a great battle. Wilson is 4-0 against Hurta at 800.

So is the 800m and 1500m and so on…when running close to one’s limits they all are challenging.

Have you ever run the 1000? Try going out in your 800 pace from last season and hang on the last 200.

You don’t go out @ your 800m pace. It is 200m longer. Don’t you get it? That is like saying the 600 is a really tough race and the proof is I tell you to go out @ your 400m race pace and try to hang on. Do you really reason this poorly?

It worked for me. I was a 1:58 high school guy. At our indoor conference meet my freshman year I ran 2:27 in the 1000. I bonked a couple times along the way. Of course I was running 1:53 later that year. If you don’t push your limits you never find them.

It's not a strong record but it is a tough distance that has to be a evenly paced as possible for best results and people run it so rarely that they often slightly underperform in such record attempts. The tight corners indoors probably don't help either.

2:34 is 12:51 5,000m pace and 4:08 mile pace.

Just facts.

Having two runners in it makes it much more likely this is run more optimally for at least one of them. If they go out in 2:00-2:03 off of 59-61 the record should be gone. Faster and they might not handle that pace well, slower and they might not lift the pace enough.

yes, there is some leeway because 2:34 is not that fast. (The outdoor women's WR is surprisingly resistant, Semenya and Kipyegon both missed it twice, although I'd think Kipyegon, Muir, Tsegay could possibly get it in a perfect race)

If both were sub 2 and sub 4 runners I'd be quite sure they'll get it. Best would probably be something like 60 - 2:01-02

I like the contradiction between the statements that the time is "not that fast" but that the best runners in the world could "possibly" get there "in a perfect race."
