NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 7 - National cross country champion at the men's Under 20 level, Samuel Wanjiru Kibathi, says his ultimate dream is to represent Kenya Get the latest local and international sports updates, football, rugby...
As for his age, Tilastapaja says he's 18 (DOB August 6, 2004) but that article says he's 17 and World Athletics lists a DOB of February 23, 2005, which would make him 17.
He ran 13:35 at altitude in 2021 and is based in Japan.
We won’t see him at World XC though right? Granted Raynold Cheruiyot (U20 1500m champ, 4th Kenyan Sr Trials) seems to be the big young talent to watch and he will be there.
Rumor is he's getting recruited by Dartmouth and UCLA!
Please, no.
Apparently he is in high school in Japan - form 2 at Kurashiki High School. Would be interesting if he went to univ. in Japan and ran Hakone but he could probably go pro in Japan or elsewhere.
He'll have to start going by his middle name, Kibathi, for obvious reasons. He's from Sammy's hometown, Nyahururu, in the Aberdares, a mountain range in Central Kenya.
First there was John Ngugi, then Sammy and I think this kid could be just as great.

That's a relief. He'll need that Japanese formation to ground him and stay focused. Most who go through that system turn out well rounded and just stand-up individuals. Look no further than the OG Kenyan-Japanese beneficiary Douglas Wakiihuri.
