This is what I was expecting based on his Instagram posts in Iten, the several mentions of a new team, and the fact that he was clearly still a Nike sponsored athlete. Definitely interested to see how this plays out and what his future holds in terms of roads vs track as well as his performances. Also curious (not that we will ever know for sure) what caused him to make this switch and if we will be seeing any more relevant BTC departures prior to the 2024 Olympics.
Scott, who is in Kenya now and hoping to work with coach Patrick Sang, reveals why he left BTC and reflects on his five years with the group that produced a 12:57 European indoor record and a World Indoor medal.
This should be really interesting. He’s shown pretty good promise in the roads. I think there’s potential he can run low 59s/2:04-2:05s if things click.
Good article. In retrospect, looking at his 3k bronze run at World Indoors that was a remarkable run beating Ebenyo and Krop. Posted on other thread but I think he has potential to run low 59s/2:04-2:05 and it’s nice to see a Bowerman guy (now former) go to the roads before he’s washed.
2:08 in the spring would be a great achievement in his first marathon. There's some competition around that level in the UK for the first time in years. Emile Cairess will be targeting that sort of time, and maybe Farah as well if he wants to go for one more Olympic team. Jake Smith has that potential as well if he stops messing around on the track - when your 1500/5000 PBs are 3:48 and 13:38, but you have run a 60:31 HM and a 2:11 off no training and one gel (he was a pacer but carried on), then it's time to accept where your strengths lay.
Yeah I was thinking long term. First one out 2:07-08 would be great. Let’s be real though, he has too much talent to be thinking he’ll max out at what the likes of Leonard Korir, Scotty Fauble are running. He’s run 12:57, this is a major talent.

He has more speed than Mo Farah and I think he should use it but.... whatever.

I think 2:07 is a reasonable high end prediction. He's better than Mantz over every other distance and he debuted with 2:08. But 2:04-2:05 is rarified air. Only one non-African born man has gone 2:04 ( Suzuki), and only two more have run 2:05 (Osaka and Moen). Odds are that Scott doesn't get there but 2:06 is a good possibility

So why bother? It's up to him, and good luck but... He could get an Olympic medal on the track.
