Anyone here listen to the latest podcast episode Steve magness and Johnathon Marcus did about vo2 max training? It was really interesting and think the topic deserves FAR more discussion within coaching circles and self-trained, serious athletes.
Personally, I think they made some great points and everything makes sense when we consider training for peripheral adaptations at the level of the muscle fibers BUT I think they neglect, as do most runners it seems, the central adaptions to one’s oxygen delivery and particularly one’s stroke volume. My (limited) understanding is that the hearts stroke volume is the most important variable to determine vo2 max, and it does not improve for experienced athletes without a sufficiently potent stimulus which can only be achieved by working at max intensity (or just below it).
So let’s hear it… what was your take on for those who listened? Thanks to Steve magness and johnathon Marcus for the FREE content, great stuff!!
