One thing I've noticed is that cyclists look way better built than distance runners. They seem to have more muscle on them and just look more athletic. Look at and compare his build to Kipchoge. Wouldn't cyclists want to be as skinny as possible to reduce the amount of weight they are pushing? And why are cyclists in general look like they have more upper body strength than elite distance runners?

2) just leaning and staying balanced on the bike builds a certain degree of upper body strength

I don't agree with that generalization. There are good looking and bad looking in both sports, but do these guys look like they can push over Kipchoge? I think not.

On the flats it's more about power to aerodynamic drag which favors relatively big muscular guys.
So climbers are going to look like distance runners with enormous quads and sprint specialists and time trial specialists are going to look more like sprinters and middle distance runners.

Rasmussen (aka Skeletor) looks downright buff relative to Hamilton in those photos.

You also get upper body work comparable to pulling lifts like rows or deadlifts while cycling uphill because the arms are reactively pulling upward against the bar.

Runners can get similar rowing/deadlift type back work by really having a mind-muscle connection and squeezing the back muscles as you pull you compression socks all the way up to your knees.

There is decent overlap. Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a lot bigger than a whole slew of top cyclists like Egan Bernal, Jonas Vingegaard, Miguel Angel Lopez, Remco Evenepoel, and Tom Pidcock who are all about 130 lbs +/-. Even sprinter Caleb Ewan is about 134 lbs.
