If it was a house party then usually there would be bands and somebody would make a flyer with the bands on it and hand out the flyers and post them on telephone poles.
We would only invite the hottest girls. They would bring more girls with them. Never invite guys or it will turn into a sausage festival. Never invite your girlfriend. That's like bringing sand to the beach ⛱️

Well. Someone would call. If I was not there, they would leave a voice mail or a message on an answering machine.
Not that complicated. Voice mail existed before cell phones.
Smoke signals. Then all the fur trappers would meet in a clearing at the base of a mountain. We'd sit around the fire and smoke our pipes and tell stories. A jug of whiskey would be passed around.

People always picked up their phones before there were answering machines. You couldn't risk missing a call that might be important. It was easy enough to get ahold of someone in the evening at a time when they were always home.

I'm 61 too. One of 9 kids. The phone would rarely ring at our house because someone was ALWAYS on it. We had the same setup - rotary phone mounted to the wall at the kitchen door to the garage. You'd go out in the garage and close the door (on that twisty cord) to get some privacy. The garage wall from ~6 foot level to the floor was covered with handwritten messages, phone numbers, pizza place numbers, doodles etc. Wish I had a pic of that wall, it was epic how covered it was with handwriting.
