How many HS boys have a chance to break the indoor 3000m this winter?

Probably the top 8 people on your list have a chance. They all have credentials that not too long ago one, maybe two ppl would have. Depends however if they focus on indoor, and if they can get into a fast race as not many states/meets run indoor 3ks at least for hs. I like Mathison and Simmons but kinda unsure abt them from their previous track credentials.

I like their odds. Sounds like the top guys from NXN and footlocker have a group chat together where they’ve been planning what meets to go to for the best competition, so the chances of alot of these guys getting into fast races against each other other against pros is pretty good.

also, I’m happy this kind of organization is happening. If the big shoe companies won’t sort out their sh*t and run 6 national meets each year, then I’m happy to see that athletes are taking it into their own hands and deciding which meets to go to together.

Mathison has run 4:04 for 1600m as a junior. Not too long ago, this would have been considered awesome. But, it’s not the 3:58 mile, 7:57 for 3000m… which the others have run.

Simmons track PBs are slower than Doshi’s. So his XC season and more particularly his performance at NXN was really a breakthrough.

although he may not break the 3k record, let's not forget Hunter Jones...likely over raced during XC he could be right up there with these 'names'.

Yes, who knows. It could be someone completely different. Could have anybody predicted Connor Burns’ 3:58 mile after XC last year? Would love to see 10+ guys go sub 8.

I would honestly bet on it. I could really see 3-4 guys going sub 4 indoor, so that number of guys going sub 8 wouldn't surprise me.

Not to try and be disrespectful to Simmons, but I have a hard time seeing him run an 8:30 equivalent when his 1600 pr is 4:17

Yes

Simmons has only ever raced at altitude for track, his prs are poor indicators of his ability. He’s also had weak competition for the most part

I wonder why good runners don’t transfer more to good HS. It could be worth $200K to them.

Simmons grew up in American Fork and his older brother ran for AF. I heard that they moved up to Idaho for a few years to take care of his grandmother.

So he didn’t just transfer to be part of a good program.

Birnbaum not scheduled to run indoors. 1st meet he is scheduled for late March which will most likely get cancelled due to weather.

not a huge fan of the guy after what happened at states last year but he did run a solo 4:07. I think he has a good shot at sub 4 and probably a sub 8 too

What happened at states last year? Also, I'm not that familiar but picture him as more of a distance guy. Do you think he'll perform at the same level in track?
