I've been holding off on buying a book through the Kickstarter just in case one of my family members is planning on gifting it to me for Christmas. Agreed on this. The piece on the NAU team written a few years back was awesome. Used to compete against the boys from NAU frequently (although no-where near the caliber most of their top scorers would post up), and it was pretty thrilling reading someone else’s perspective throughout the season and for competition. I’m sure that every runner, no matter the “level”, feels as if they can write a story about a singular run or competition. Most never put the effort forth to do so. This work will inspire future and current competitors and fans, Matt.

I mean I’m sure Matt didn’t start this thread for posts such as this but I would be really interested in understanding the team and accountability to the team aspect of the ‘dynasty’. I’ve posted this before but I ran for a top 10-15 team and as a freshman our lead guy who was a senior barely spoke with us. When I read about NAU, and indeed some of the other successful teams now, the concept of cross country as a team sport seems so prevalent in the discussion.
And before folks say obviously nico young scoring 2 points at nc’s is best for the team - but his focus on team goes beyond that.

Hi Matt- Not sure if it's too late, but if you could add another tier to get an ebook version, that would be great! I'm happy to contribute but tbh have no interested in a physical book. Even the same $30 price would be an instant buy for me. Otherwise I'll keep an eye on it and at least pledge the $10 if still needed in a few days.

Based only on the acknowledgments section screen shot in this thread it might be debatable.

Hope there is some history in the book AKA Richard Selby, Richard Sliney history. Also, Jim ? and Bo Reed and Kim White history and David Barney history.

And the Swedish women history. In other words, long history, not short history.

Congrats on making World XC team. Is it true you have to kick in $5,000 for this athlete self-funded team?

One of the reasons that NAU has become six time national champions is because of a team culture that has evolved over decades. This current team has continued to improve upon the pieces that were working, while discarding those that didn’t. The team centered approach to NCAAXC at NAU is genuine. It isn’t just something they put on for the cameras. This all comes back to the team culture of making sure everyone feels at home on the team. Coach Smith used to tell us, “If one person isn’t doing well, then the whole team isn’t doing well.” It became necessary to elevate the whole team, not just some individuals. When you have an entire team that truly feels invested and a part of the outcome in November, then you have a team that can do incredible things.

You should never judge a book by its poorly written acknowledgements section 😂
