Sean Brosnan has mostly given up on recruiting high school seniors. He is focusing primarily on transfers, and he is also talking to some of the top high school juniors.
But it's always possible UCLA could get a late commitment from a high school senior. For example, Kaho Cichon didn't decide on UCLA until she had almost graduated from high school.
Should be a short thread as there aren’t many recruits to discuss. Brosnan found out you can’t just BS kids into coming and there are other coaches who actually have a track record of successfully recruiting.
I’ve heard things aren’t going so great for him at UCLA as he’s apparently frustrated the level of commitment from the team doesn’t match his expectations and he is rubbing many of the athletes the wrong way. Sounds a bit bumpy in Westwood. Maybe over time issues will work themselves out, but it’s reaching a tipping point.
I've posted a few times that you can't really judge a new college coach until he has a few recruiting classes to see 1) who does he get and 2) what can he do with them.
I'll stand by that, but it already looks like the first part isn't going so well.

It's very hard to recruit a high school senior when you only get hired in August and many of the top seniors have already narrowered down their choices to their top 4 or 5 schools.
That's why Brosnan has mostly given up on this year's high school seniors and is going after transfers.

Didn’t seem to impact Cal Poly, or was the 30 extra days that critical?

Brosnan wants to coach people who are all in on being the best they can possibly be, like the Youngs and Sahlmans. UCLA hasn't been attracting those types of distance runners, so there's a mismatch between what Brosnan wants and what the current UCLA runners want.
Brosnan may get to the point where he encourages the less committed members of the team to transfer, so it can free up spots for more committed transfers to come in.

Great!
Again, like anyone he gets a few years.
But can we assume that, when appropriate, he will be announcing a list of studs that he picked up through the transfer portal?

It's two completely different situations. Cal Poly's new coach had NINE years at his previous college where he had been very busy recruiting high school students, so he had a whole pipeline of high school students wanting to run for him.
When he arrived at Cal Poly all he had to do was contact his pipeline and say "I still want to coach you except it's going to be at a different school."
At the beginning of August Brosnan had zero high school runners in his pipeline, because he was coming from a high school not from another college.
So it's not fair to judge Brosnan by what Cal Poly has been able to do this year.

The Cal Poly coach came from Mississippi. Do you really think he was recruiting all these athletes from California before he moved out there? Use your brain.
The difference here is that he had a history of success at the collegiate level, which made recruiting a good class possible on short notice.
Poaching old NP athletes through the portal won’t be enough to compete in the PAC12 or build an NCAA level program. You have to have consistent classes of HS runners that you can develop as your foundation, with a few high level transfers here and there to round things out. You should be able to get good HS athletes to go to UCLA.

Completely make sense to me, but with that said, it’s puzzling that he would be telling anyone who would listen that it was going to take him 3 years to podium at nationals.

College coaches recruit all over the country, not just in their local geographic area. That's how recruiting works.
I know a girl who just graduated in California who was recruited by 30 schools, and most of them weren't in California. Some were even on the east coast.
And at Footlocker/Champs there are always some college coaches there and I see them talking to runners who often live very far away from the colleges where those coaches are from.

Yes, he's very optimistic. I don't think he can pull that off on the men's side, unless the Sahlmans end up deciding that they don't like NAU.
On the women's side I can see him having a excellent team in 3 years, but probably not podium at nationals.
Of course that’s how recruiting works for some schools, but I don’t remember any guys from California ever going to Ole Miss. You probably don’t spend much time building a “recruiting pipeline” in areas where you don’t sign people from.

Aaron Cantu from NP hasn’t made his commitment yet. He has been improving this year and beat Ramses Cortes.
Hector Martinez will be doing track according to Instagram. The reason why he didn’t do XC is because he was injured. Maybe he will run for ucla as well
