Phenomenal run by Sam Tanner at the Night of 5s in New Zealand running 13:32 to take 45 seconds off his former PB, finishing second to Julian Oakley who ran 13:29. The race was run in steady rain with Tanner and Oakley dueling it out throughout the entire race. Although I would say it's definitely a time to be expected given Tanner is now a 3:31 1500m runner it's still great to see him actually run it.

Here on Let's Run potential is much more important than actually going out and doing it. Let's say with that 1500 speed and no rain he's a 13:10 guy.

Not mind-blowing, but a big PR in bad conditions is never a bad race. I wonder if Wightman seeing so much success after building a lot of strength last winter has influenced more 1500 guys to do the same. The idea occurred to me after I saw Kerr ran that 63 half a couple days ago, so I wonder if there's a trend that way.
At the very least the 1500 seems way more strength dominated now than a few years ago. Jakob and Hoare are two of the best and they're both really strong runners, Wightman got to his best after getting stronger, Cheruiyot is a 1:43 guy but he could still solo a 3:29, and it seems like the hoarde of talent below them is generally more 15/5 focused.

Yes, and Sam Tanner stated explictly in an interview two months ago that he's going to increase his mileage. It's definitely a trend that we're seeing.
''In terms of training, the load hasn’t been crazy. I think next year I’m going to step up in volume by a little bit and that’ll probably get me that bit closer to 3:30, and maybe sub-3:30. This year I was probably doing 100K a week, 60-70 miles a week in the winter or base phase. During the season it’d dip under that, and hopefully this year will be a bit higher.''
