nothing funnier to me than people who decry millennials as the weakest generation without discussing the absolute worst generation that raised them. The younger boomers and the older Gen X'ers are the worst parents that have ever existed. They're the ones that saw their kids crying once and demanded the coach give everyone a trophy. It certainly wasn't the kid.

This. My generation (I´m 53) is the worst parental generation in human history. When i got bad grades in school my parents asked me "how do you explain this?" When today´s kids get bad grades their parents ask the same question to the teachers.

this isn't new. they are just talking about it now. it's not something that should be glorified, but I'm sure it's real.

I think this stuff is cyclical. I'm 51, GenX, my parents raised my brother and I the way you describe. We also got spanked or the belt from time to time, and our parents, though they loved us, were not always super involved.

So I think a lot of GenX'ers weren't so happy about some of that, and were determined to raise their kids differently than they were raised. I'm not a parent, but that's what my brother did -- no spankings, "timeouts", stuff like that.

Probably some soft-generation parents are now thinking about how they're going to raise their kids to be hard..

Yes it's the parents fault. I don't necessarily buy the genetics argument but we are certainly a product of our environment. The parents give the kid all their own issues and then some additional ones just for fun. But the parents probably got it from their own parents and then cycle perhaps continued down the family tree. Nowadays the main problem is that people have normalized the single parent lifestyle (probably trying to escape accountability for their failures)--which of course negatively impacts children.
