Serious answer...jobs are tough in this career field, and you take the best one you can. Assuming you are in a position to be selective:
1) Stability/longevity of the Head Coach at the institution is nice, it means assistant positions will be more stable and more likely that the Head Coach is well supported and satisfied in their role.
2) Success of previous assistants can be telling; do they move on the better pay or positions? Do they leave the career field? Are there any long term assistants on staff? Gives you an idea of what you can expect in the future on the staff.
3) Success in areas outside of the HC event group. It is good when the Head Coach has successful athletes, but assistants need scholarships and support for their event areas as well. Does the Head Coach have a track record of relatively successful athletes in at least some other event areas? That tells what they are willing to fund/how they view those events.
4) How do other coaches (specifically peer head coaches)/administrators view the Head Coach? Are they professional? Well liked by other coaches or even their own admin? Tells you a lot on how they relate to people.
All things to consider if you are in a position you like and can afford to be selective with new oppertunities.

1. Gives credit- hate head coaches that take credit for everything. Especially ideas they never came up with
2. Mentorship- show me how you got where you are. Give me tools so I can leave and be successful one day
3. Let me coach my event- if you hired me to coach then let me do it
4. Open communication- when you don’t keep it real with your staff or don’t let us know what’s going on or why you make certain decisions it comes across as sneaky
5. Constructively criticize me in private- don’t correct me in front of athletes or your employees
6. Rapid fire! Honest, has integrity, works as hard if not harder then everyone else, has clear vision and goals, has a plan to achieve said goals, inspiring, shows appreciation to staff, has the staffs back, believes in taking vacation, supportive, problem solver
i know I know. I’m describing a unicorn
