Noah Lyles gets big LA Times feature and he talks BIG in it. Says he has plans for WR in both 100m and 200m

2022 he went all in on the 200m, 2023 he'll ad more focus back on the 100m in prep for the 100/200 double in 2024

This guy is so annoying that I hope someone humbles him in both the 100 and 200 in Paris.

The 200 is maybe.The 100 no way.Has the speed endurance for the 200 record but not enough foot speed to break 9.58.

Incorrect. He definitely has the foot speed but not the start (yet) for the 100.

Henry Carr would beat the faster Bob Hayes at 200m, how? Tommie Smith always beat the faster Jim Hines at 200, how? The first time I saw Yohan Blake he was gaining on Bryshon Nellum on a 4x4 anchor, Carr and Smith were 100-400 sprinters, Hayes and Hines were not. Usain Bolt started out a 400 cat, as we know MJ a stud 400m sprinter, Gatlin could split sub 45.00, that 400m ablity a real big deal for any 200m sprinter, Lyles ran the 4x4 in high school. He has that 400 ability.

I have no probems with a cocky sprinter thinking he can rule the sprint world, actually.....cool~~~ Cali high school kid Mike Farmer wore one black knree high sock and instead of standing behind the blocks he stood out in front of his, strong case of........look at me. Marvin Mills who ran the anchor on Texas A&M 4x4 once had such a big lead he topped just before the finish line turned a waved.....come on you can do it.....ha!!!! Yep....DQed.

Lyles the best thing for track, the sport needs some personalities.

His "personality" seems to inauthentic.

I don't know what to think of this - simply because I feel like I heard this exact same rhetoric before Tokyo, and well, we all know what happened in Tokyo.

I get the school of thought with respect to putting your goals out there in order to create accountability/healthy pressure - except the last time he did this it backfired badly. He clearly now thinks he's past this with help from his therapist but it's one thing talking about it and another thing executing it.

He's one of the greatest talents the sprint world has ever seen - as good as advertised and the self-confidence bordering on hubris I guess is good for his brand and a sport that can sometimes be devoid of personality. But in saying that I feel personally Noah could take a slightly different approach to this rather than these recycled narratives that can also make him come across as mildly unlikeable when in reality he is a super nice and humble kid (which is why I know that this is ultimately a slightly contrived act). Just an opinion.

Can someone please explain "foot speed" to me?? Do you just mean "top end speed"?
I've been running and watching track for 25 years and every time I hear this term I'm thoroughly confused. It is used to describe sprinters to marathoners. Isn't all running speed "foot speed"? All running races are won by moving at a faster speed than the other people, right?

I hope he loses because he likes anime.

Lyles is 25 years old and his 100m PR is 9.86. If he had any chance of ever threatening 9.58, he would've at least ran 9.7x by now.

He does have the ability to break the 200 record, but he'll need a race where everything comes together perfectly, which is never a guarantee. I'd give him a 25-30% chance of getting it in the next couple years.

Well, he did just run 19.30 and broke Michael Johnson’s US Record. And he ran under 20 every single 200m race this year. He had the best season any 200m runner has ever had. Seems to me he talked with his feet just plenty.

Yeah the 100m conversation is perplexing at best - even comparing him to Bolt who of course came from the 200 down as Noah would too, Bolt had run 9.69 at the age of 22 and .58 at 23 so this is almost completely impossible to imagine. I don't actually understand why he would even say this tbh. The 200 obviously is more plausible but he's 25 now and will be 26 by the time the business end of the 2023 season is on him. Bolt ran 19.19 at 23 and Blake 19.26 at 21. Now Johnson ran his AR at age 29 (uh...yep) but that seems to be the real outlier in terms of lifetime bests across elite 100/200 runners. In reality I think if Noah is going to break the 200 WR he has 2 seasons left to do it and historically guys aren't out there peppering the mark so he might have lifetime 1-2 shots left in his career (his shape, the conditions, all the other intangibles involved in setting a PR). So really I give it a little less than 25-30% but your logic is right on.

With all due respect to you and Noah, I think Usain Bolt has had the best season any 200m runner has ever had. He had a fantastic season - but Bolt won a World title with the WR and obviously also never lost a race - that's the best season and we aren't even talking about the 3 Olympic titles he won either.
