I dont believe hes done. I think hes pushing himself to hard to get back into race shape. Im optimistic, the dude did blast a 2:09. Thats solid for Americans.
How are Salomon's road racing shoes anyway? (I'm not saying the shoes had anything to do with his injury flaring up, but I also don't know of many elites or sub-elites doing road racing in them).

The half marathon "loop hole" as you call it is a harder standard than the marathon. If he can't hit the OTQ with the marathon he won't hit it with the half.
