I heard about this 19 year old pleading guilty today, guaranteeing life in prison without possibility of parole.
I figure prison must be terrible when you first get there. You don’t know anyone and you’re used to freedom. But after a couple of years you probably develop a good network, maybe you’ve worked out, learned how to fight.
I’m guessing nobody here has some serious time, but maybe you know someone who did. So how bad is it?

In my limited experience (a couple of months, UK) there's very little violence or bullying. Anybody assaulting another prisoner will end up serving more time, there's nowhere to avoid cameras, every cell has a camera and the shower cubicle doors only come up to your chest so the cameras can see there too.
The 'dont drop your soap' silliness is just a myth. Everybody forms their opinion of prisons from films.
Most people in there are normal guys that just made a mistake. Often whilst drunk or high on something. Society has very few really bad people and the really bad guys capable of stabbing you are probably in isolation or a mental hospital.
I guess some countries have it worse than others. I wouldnt want to be in a central american prison.

Central America is a cupcake compared to Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama. At least in Central America you can bribe your way out.

Prison is terrible. Dehumanizing. Even 6 months in jail can change a person for the worse. And if you have an end date that is many years the future, the lack of hope is torture.
In the US, prison is used primarily as punishment and torture - destroy hope.

The experience depends on the type of prison. I know someone who spent time in a low security prison for small crimes such as non violent theft. They literally let the inmates walk around the lobby of the jail. Then I know someone who spent time in a prison with murderers serving life sentences. The peaceful experience you had is likely a small time criminal environment with people who committed a few hundred dollars of theft or didn’t pay child support. Stuff like that.
A prison where everyone is serving life in prison for violent crimes is much different. You have to be in your toes at all times. People fight nonstop. If you breathe the wrong way or walk the wrong way you’ll get your teeth knocked out for no reason. And prison rape is very common. When you're already servings life sentence you don’t care about more time for committing assaults. If everyone’s sentence is 6 months or less then or course nobody will fight.
I’ve thought about this. Besides the lonliness and bordem it doesn’t sound too bad. Stay out of trouble 3 meals a day get to exercise and read. Seems very stress free and I’d be lying some days if I didn’t think I’d enjoy prison more than real life (what will I eat today, work stress, bills, etc) although if there was no end I don’t see the point you’d have no goals or anything might as well just end it

Very true! UK poster lives in another world. Americans tend to hate each other and are pervesely proud of the horrible punishments.
The stuff in the movies is cliche and overblown, but it does happen and is accepted by the public as part of the deterrent.

In Uk we have A B C D facilities. A is most secure and D is open. 'Walking around the lobby' sounds like D. I was in B and later D. D i had my own cell with a TV and my own key. You could clearly smell people smoking cannabis every night, the smell would drift down the hallway.
B has some prisoners serving life sentences. Probably the most dangerous people are in A. But all this nonsense about rape and constant fights is silly. Sensationalised. Happens but very rare. Probably worse in any busy city centre on saturday night.
Like i said, might be different in other countries.

I taught math at a Juvenile Detention Center. Wow eye opener. One kid I worked with after a lesson looked me in the eye and said, "I can find out where anyone lives and burn their house down." The all had to walk down the halls with their hands behind their back, fingers together in a diamond shape so guards could see they weren't carrying a shiv. Most of the time it was routine but every month or so somebody would lose it and the whole place would go in lockdown. Glad I could leave after my shift!
Oh and they said only person had made it over the inner fences then hundred yards to the outer fence and almost over. It was young girl and they said she could run like a deer! If she had only taken up the steeplechase instead!

Brittney is currently spending time in something equivalent to the former-day gulags of Stalin. 17-hour work days, roach and rat infestations, horrible food, abuse for being a black person and a lesbian, wardens who are crazy. For her it can't get much worse.
1. he'll probably be in protected custody if he doesn't get the death penalty. life in prison is mainly for murder offenses, and most murderers are black so he wouldn't be placed in the "general" area since they'd probably want to settle the score quickly.
2. they have nothing to lose so they're often worse. I have an acquaintance who spent a couple of years in prison for white collar crime (think tax evasion, money laundering, etc) and they would have a life after so they behaved. if you have nothing to lose you don't care at all
