What about the Stanford coach ?
Almost put him in there. But it seems like recruits go to Stanford for the academics, location, and because of the other studs on the gems more so than because of Santos. Also being ranked first and not running very well at nationals doesn’t help his case (Not that 4th is a bad result)

Vin Lanana
Mark Wetmore without question is a Top 5 coach
1. Mike Smith

Isn't Cole the guy who forgot to enter his distance runners into the conference championship one year?
Martin Smith. Probably the best coach in history.
Trick question: Siemers mines is 1-5.

Ummm....Ever hear of John McDonnell?
Pretty sure this is about current distance coaches in the NCAA. Undoubtedly John was the most successful.
If you took any of the top say 10 teams at nationals and swapped coaches, do you think there would be noticeable changes in performance? If the smiths switched schools (or recruits), I expect the results of the meet would be pretty much the same.
I will make an exception for Stanford who seems to run better in October of every year than they do in November....
Martin Smith was successful at UVA and Oregon and Wisconsin and Oklahoma and ISU. He got fired last year. ISU didn't qualify and Oklahoma didn't even field a team.
Yes, Martin Smith has excellent results in several programs. He is also a abusive, insane, and couldn’t give a single s*** about his athletes.
Interesting how he was successful over 40 years. He had no problem recruiting kids. Seem that is what the job description requires.
1. Jerry Schumacher
2. Mike Smith (6 out of 7 is inarguable)
3. Dave Smith (multiple national titles, been on the podium in multiple eras)
4. Mark Wetmore (outside the top 10 i think only 2 or 3 times in 25 years)
5. Laurie Henes (multiple national titles, done an admirable job)
People that people will whine about:
Vin - hasn't been a good coach in over a decade. UVA hasn't done sh** since he has been there.
Milt - Top 5 recruiter, top 25 coach.
Ricardo Santos, Diljeet Taylor, Sean Carlson, John Hayes - probably top 10, just on the outside looking in
Crazy no mention in this thread yet of ryan vanhoy
Dan McClimam
Will the Seans (Carlson and Brosnan) make this list ever?
Wetmore is super overrated. In the past three years they really underperformed at nationals. Even with some of the best grad transfers they can’t crack top 5.
