Dave Smith is a much better coach than Mike Smith. NAU has an all star team from high school but Dave Smith develops talent MUCH better. Mike Smith has a massive advantage because of the altitude (both because it benefits training and recruits pick NAU specifically for the altitude).
Far more impressed with what Dave Smith has achieved than Mike Smith who inherited the national championship team.

Yeah, Tyler Day and Abdihamid Nur were Footlocker finalists. Good call there, guy.

NAUs 3rd guy was a junior from Alaska that ran 9:24 in high school. OSUs third guy was a transfer from Morocco that ran 13:55 before he stepped on campus. Who develops and who recruits again?

Or the Kenyan and British guys at #4 and #5 for OSU?
The only thing you can say about Dave Smith is that he stuck to his principles on this occasion and kept Shea Foster on the bench even though he might have been a difference maker today.
NCAA championships are won with talent. Coaching is important, but a VERY distant 2nd or lower on the priority list. Look at NCSU - great recruiting. Sometimes coaches are able to see talent despite slower HS times or get lucky with a walk on, but all champions are genetic anomalies.
OSU should just claim that the scoring was rigged and refuse to accept the results. At the next NCAA board meeting, fans should storm NCAA headquarters, threaten to kill NCAA President Mark Emmett, and demand the 2022 XC results be overturned. Bonus points if they can get the My Pillow guy to claim that he has evidence that NAU cheated.
Can someone explain when and why the tiebreaker rules was changed?
Not sure what you mean exactly. The NCAA used to just say that a tie was a tie (which is my preference). But very roughly ten years ago (? I think?) they decided to break all ties with their tiebreaker rule, which previously had only been used to determine which team(s) advanced from a Regional meet to Nationals.
AFAIK the NCAA has never used a sixth-finisher tiebreaker. If I'm wrong, I'll appreciate correction.
