Calls to boycott the 2022 Cup and coverage of human rights abuses in host country Qatar could impact viewership and advertising revenue for the globe's biggest sporting event.
Agreed. I lived and worked in Qatar for 3+ years and the whole country uses it's extreme wealth very unethically. There is also deep rooted fascism as can be clearly seen by the mistreatment of the 1000s of labourers brought in to literally keep the country running. If it wasn't for them the country would fall apart. The local Qatari people would never "lower" themselves to work on a construction site or participate in any kind of labour intensive task.

This comment is probably BS through and through but let me just say that the possessive form of “it” is “its”, not “it’s”, which means “it is.” This and who’s/whose are among the most common offenses committed today.
If you find that offensive you probably need to reevaluate your life values lol. This is an informal message board, not an English grammar 101 class. Forgive me for not proof reading my response lol
you guys arent very tolerant. different people have different cultures. also the moral outrage of the west is a joke. in 4 years the wc will be hosted by the most militaristic country in the world still occupying iraq.
Want to know who to blame? Blame the greedy West for making a money grab from a bunch of misogynistic Arabs who think nothing of oppressing their own people, much less others.
The West/FIFA etc talk a a big game about respecting human rights, womens rights LGBTQ rights, blah blah and then look what happens.
And don't even get me started on how every structure built there (and basically around the ME) are done by slave labor imported from S Asian countries. They treat the men like garbage, take away their passports and hundreds end up injured or killed every year.
I'm glad its showcasing to the world what real Western sanctioned oppression looks like.
It is more than a mess, it is a human rights disaster. The ban on alcohol and some of the cultural differences of the Middle East I don't think are that big of a deal. I can go to a sporting event and not drink since I'm not an alcoholic. The problem arises from their complete and utter disdain for human rights in their workers, in the LGBT community, and frankly with most women.
An actual quote from FIFA President Gianni Infantino who goes on to defend Qatar.
Warning: A rich white mans description of discrimination follows..hold on to your tissues.
"I don't have to defend Qatar, they can defend themselves. I defend football. Qatar has made progress and I feel many other things as well. "Of course I am not Qatari, Arab, African, gay, disabled or a migrant worker. But I feel like them because I know what it means to be discriminated and bullied as a foreigner in a foreign country. "As a child I was bullied because I had red hair and freckles. I was bullied for that."

Being homophobic is not a "cultural difference".
Whoa buddy, cool it with the Islamaphobia. Not okay. At all.

Are you upset that the Qataris in general disbelieve that gender dysphoric (or those claiming to be gender dysphoric) biological males should be in otherwise female-only bathrooms or locker rooms? I'm in the West: I disbelieve in the claims of transgenderism. Does my disbelief violate someone's human rights?

Do the local europeans and americans lower themselve to work on making their clothes? Or they leave it to children in Bangladesh or Ethiopia?
Spoiler : It's the same everywhere. Developped countries use labor force from less developped countries for manual work, without paying attention to the condition of those workers.
Same for bribery.
Pointing fingers to Qatar is just racism and islamophobia.

If you criminalize it that is exactly what it means
