Top individual qualifiers is simply there to make sure that the winner of the NCAAs is actually the fastest runner in the nation.
If you are not top 5 (non team) and not top 2 at large, there is ni way that you are the fastest in the nation
What happens if there are not 4 individuals in the top 25 of a region like the Mountain Region on the men's side? Do they allocate those spots to the at-large pool?
If you can’t get top 25 at the region meet you don’t deserve to go. I don’t want individuals who have no chance of being top 100 clogging space. however I do accept some regions are straight garbage (south) and need to be reworked but I don’t have any better ideas
It is a pretty fair system. Don’t know how to make it any better. You have to be a top 4 individual and you have to be all region (top 25) then they offer up a few more at large.
You know what your region look like before you go to the meet. If you are in the northeast or south central, can’t be outside the top 10. If you are in the west or mountain you have some more room.

It does. Some individuals from the Mountain and West didn’t make it and would go as far to say they might have won a region out right. Some of the individuals like teams going are just not that good. Texas women are awful.

If you aren't in the top 25 you aren't doing jack at nationals. Sorry.
But they wouldn't finish top 50 at nationals so there is no reason for them to qualify. It isn't a participation event. It is to see who the best 3 teams are and the top 40 individuals.

Disagree, some of them would have a chance at top 40, in fact it happens every year with those on teams.

Ezekiel Rop got left out, Ibrahim Adin (I'm not sure if I spelled that right) of Boise State got left out, a couple guys from Michigan State got left out who could have been all-american, an Eastern Michigan runner who's been all-American in the past, got left out

No qualifying process is perfect. Especially in a sport where the only metric to use is place. The fast chaps that don’t get in could always transfer to a slower region.

In the 2013 Northeast Region on the Men's side had 6 teams qualify. Every single guy in the top 30 went to the NCAA championships (the individual qualifiers finished 11th, 17th, 24th and 25th, the rest of the top 30 were on qualifying teams).
You are too worried about the guys who didn't perform on the day of the regional. A 1 seed can lose to a 16 seed in the 1st round of the NCAA BB tournament.
There will be up to 38 individuals in the race who really don't belong. The best basketball player in the NCAA doesn't have a path to get to the championship game if his team loses.

That’s crazy. So I guess 46 people made it out of northeast region that year.
Mountain this year qualifies 51 people (out of a field of 119)
