Happy 100th Birthday Kurt Vonnegut!

I would recommend Hocus Pocus. It doesnt have a sci fi angle like his other famous books. It is one of the darkest books I have ever read, ever.

I think I’ve only read three Vonnegut novels - Mother Night, Breakfast of Champions, and Hocus Pocus. I liked Hocus Pocus a lot too!

Slaughterhouse Five is, for me, his masterpiece. I’ve read all his books, although none recently. For me, he was uneven as a writer, with some subpar works among the otherworldly brilliant dark humour in his best

I read many, many Vonnegut novels when I was in my 20s. Slaughterhouse-Five, or the Children's Crusade is his best. Cats Cradle is very good. I enjoy some of the stories. The appearance of a shotgun-toting Diana Moon-Glampers on the scene is deflating, to say the least.

i read breakfast of champions and liked it so much i read every one of his novels - one every weekend - for the next several months. still think breakfast of champions is the best but liked god bless you mr rosewater, too.

Slaughterhouse 5 is definitely my favourite. I also really liked Mother Night.

Cat's Cradle seems to get a lot of accolades, but it didn't do much for me, and Breakfast of Champions was just wank.

My grandfather was on the Cornell Daily Sun editorial staff with KV. They used to sit in college town bars and interview people that went to the games rather than go to the games.

Many great books have already been mentioned, but I would single out the book of short stories, Welcome to the Monkey House, as particularly creative, interesting and fun.

the man certainly had a lot of humanity. a great deal of personal tragedy, but did the stand-up thing - like raising his orphaned sister's children. you could pick worse people to model your life after.

Emphatically, the "so it goes" line is utter garbage. No gosh darn idea how SH5 became the guy's alpha opus.

And Slapstick is a hilarious and overlooked novel. Maybe get Galapagos in the mix?

Slaughterhouse Five is an amazing work, my fave. Vonnegut had a sustained period where he pumped out several great books. I just re-read Breakfast of Champions. Dark, hilarious, poignant... "and so on"

This brings back memories. I do remember that I read all his books and enjoyed them a lot. May have to revisit one. I tend to be a short-story type, so Welcome to the Monkey House for me.

The phrase is "magnum opus".

You're mixing two different languages (Greek and Latin) by saying "alpha opus".

Needless to say, I don't hold your literary criticisms in high esteem.

In the context of the book, the "and so it goes" line is perfect.
