As someone that enjoyed and benefitted from other “cancer”
threads (I binge read several of them while in the hospital several days before
my craniotomy), I thought I’d create one of my own. I’ll post weekly training
summaries until my race in February.
Goal Race: Tallahassee Marathon on February 5th
Goal time: sub 3 hours
No recent races to judge my fitness. I did Pikes Peak
marathon in September in a leisurely ~7:40. I’m doing a duathlon relay race
with a friend on Nov 19 that involves me running 2 x ~2 mile trail segments. I’m
doing the Pine Mountain 19 mile trail run in December and a 30k tune up race in
January 14th .
Constraints:
- Grade 4 astrocytoma
- Wearing a medical device called Optune (~5 pound
backpack, and 4 large “arrays” that stick to my head like band aids & provide
low dose of radiation). I take them off 2-3 times per week to shave and put
medicine on my skin. This is when I do workouts. - 1 more round of chemo
- Immunotherapy every 6 weeks (mostly just makes
me fatigued for a day or two) - Two-year-old son
- ~ketogenic diet
Strengths
- Ran a poorly paced 2:58 on this course in 2020
- Easy / low stress work-from-home job. Can often “flex” time to run at my convenience
- Supportive wife
- Hometown race
- Only one more round of chemo (M-F of Thanksgiving week)

11/2/2022 40min, 5 mi: 5 Aussies: ~92, 95, 95, 96, 92 (~400m with some undulations)
11/3/2022 22min, 2.5mi optune jog
11/4/2022 42min, 4.78mi. 5 hill reps up 6th: 66, 69, 65, 65, 66
11/5/2022 31min, 3.4mi optune jog and some fitness trail
11/6/2022 107min, 13.6mi trail run. 4 hill reps after ~6 miles (58, 58, 59, 58, then 16min of tempo)
