Editor's note on 7/2/2024- This old thread is getting a lot of clicks as lots of people are googling Nikki Hiltz after NBC published an article "Transgender runner Nikki Hiltz is headed to the Paris Olympics" on her making the Olympic team. The article should have noted that Hiltz's is biological female and not on testosterone as World Athletics forbids that. Hiltz does not have an unfair advantage over the other competitors.
Hitlz got a huge profile on CNN and this caught my eye.
“When the people that are calling the race misgender me and then they apologize, I can’t just be like, ‘Oh, no worries, it’s okay.’ Because it’s not,”
“I think there’s definitely been awkward moments with that. But, overall, the longer that I’m out and the more people that know my pronouns and use them, it has been really rewarding.”
Running in the quiet, in those spaces between footsteps when both feet are in mid-air and flying for a millisecond, Nikki Hiltz figured out their gender identity.
I think it's a safe assumption that most Non-binary activists are also liberal. Is it lost on them that there are other social issues far more pressing than "pronouns?" It seems BEYOND selfish.
I'm confused. The CNN article says in two places that Hiltz came out as transgender and nonbinary last year. Hiltz isn't transgender, right? Isn't that a totally different (and mutually exclusive, since trans people transition from one gender to the other) thing from being nonbinary? Hiltz even is quoted in the article as saying that there aren't enough transgender athletes to warrant legislative action, and that they have never raced against a transgender person; if they were trans, they would've said something like, "enough other trans athletes" or "another trans person."
We can barely get competent announcing/broadcasting in this sport as it is. It's one thing when you have some jabroni from FloTrack who may use the wrong pronouns because they are a moron, but when Kara Goucher, who is a big supporter of Nikki, slips up, and immediately and genuinely apologizes, I don't know what else one can expect.
As many of you know, I'm not a fan of the "let trans people compete in elite sport in the gender identify" as I think it's discriminatory against women. But maybe a change in the English language will be something useful out of this obsession with gender and what not.
I've long thought we need a non-plural, gender neutral term in English like they have in Spanish.
It always bothers me that the default is he or she. When I'm talking to my daughter, I realize it's sexist to just say he and it's not economical to say "he or she" and it sound akward to say "they".
The default is to say he but it very well may not be a he. Adding in "he or she" is annoying. It can sometimes work but not always. If 'they' ends up being both singular and plural without sounding awkward, then one good thing will have come from this.
The thing I've never understood about the whole pronoun thing is that when you make a big deal out of it, you're basically giving free, powerful ammunition to anyone who wants to bully you. It seems to be a case of "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will send me into a spiral of extreme depression and do great psychological damage." Like, if you want to take a stand against the gender binary, by all means have at it, but you will need to be tough and expect pushback from the dominant norms you are trying to subvert. I'm honestly pretty neutral on cases like Hiltz's, but they are not doing the movement any favors by engaging in what appears to me to be narcissistic whining.
Any Republican politician out there needs to double down on trans issues. Don't be fooled by the corporate media or the fake election results. What the people are really concerned about are the tiny handful of trans and nonbinary athletes out there. They are a real threat to our democracy. Every waking hour for every Republican should be spent on making the 2024 election about trans issues. Our children will come home covered in cat litter if we do not do something. This issue is a proven winner for Republicans. Keep at it. Doin' a heckuva job, Republies.
Don't get it twisted, Hiltz has repeatedly indicated that the motivation to do this is to stand up for youth and make it easier for them going forward. Hiltz is making the point that those who purport to be allies need to do better, any thinking person who speaks for a living should be able to adapt.

You could say this to anyone complaining about anything that isn't climate change, war, or some other huge global problem. Like I know your car broke down, but is it lost on you that this is nowhere near as pressing as slowing CO2 emissions? It seems beyond selfish that you would care about your car at times like these.

Give me a break. it's a very new phenomenon calling any single person "they", and it's very awkward to say and one could easily make that mistake. For her to say that basically she won't just accept someone's well meaning apology is arrogant.
She's never made an honest mistake in her life?
If people do it on purpose and /or don't apologize that's completely different.
But making an honest mistake and apologizing is not good enough for the binary crowd now? Oy vay.
So take a break, triple-x guy. Your response is certainly arrogant, if you're at all self-aware. Hiltz is taking it upon herself to coach allies, she's really just saying "do better." It's okay if you and your brethren let that get under your skin, I think she's fine if the mighty LRC cognoscenti can't take that in-stride.
