This is no more than a plea for the Democrats to do what the so-called establishment in the GOP failed to do in the face of the Trump challenge, which is to defend the now demonstrably failed centre-right consensus.

The GOP has allowed the far right tiger they rode to power with Trump (the one that was born in the '90s, in the form of Pat Buchanan, who saw potential in the right wing opposition to Reagan) to turn over and devour them. And now some that saw their party devoured are turning to the Democrats and shouting "Do something!" Too late, Lincoln Project, Never Trumpers, blah, blah. Start your own party.

The Democrats have serious problems, but among them is NOT running too far to the left. Why do you think Biden was the candidate in 2020 and not Bernie? Why do you think the progressive caucus has so much less power in the house and congress than Manchin and Sinema? No Democrat seriously stumped for defunding the cops, even though that demand was grossly misrepresented. And rising crime is a genuine problem, but so is mass incarceration. Both parties have had their chances to do something significant about both problems and both have failed.

The US needs meaningful partisanship, not right wing bipartisan consensus. That ship has sailed, and the new far right base of the GOP will never allow it back into harbor.

The Republican platform is entirely fear-based at this point. If you vote for Democrats:

- They are coming for your guns

- They are coming for your church

- They're going to let all the criminals run free after they take your gun

- Their buddies the illegals are coming for your job and your daughter

- Speaking your daughter, the Dems want to make her into a transgender or force her to use the men's bathroom

- re: your daughter, btw, we're taking away her reproductive freedoms.

...etc...

The only solution? Tax cuts!

How the hell do people fall for this garbage? I yearn for the days when we had an actual functional Republican party that had real ideas and intended to try and pass meaningful legislation.

The very first complaint: ending mandatory minimum sentences.

That’s bad?

Some drug offenses carry a mandatory minimum sentence if five years.
Sometimes an innocent person gets arrested and can’t be bailed out. The easiest way to proceed is to plead guiltily.
If the offense has a mandatory minimum, the judge must sentence that person to those five years, even if the judge feels that it is not warranted in that case.

Ending mandatory minimums let’s the judge be the judge of how much time they should serve depending on the individual circumstances.

Harsh penalties don’t deter crime.
People often commit crimes based on the circumstances they were raised and the environment they live.

Voting Republican isn’t going to reduce these crimes.
It will reduce safety nets that could push more people into crime.
And they would criminalize abortion.

- It's disingenuous to say they're not coming for your guns. That is definitely a long term generational goal.

- They did "try?" to close churches the last couple years.

- Letting all criminals run free is quite the exaggeration but there are serious implications with eliminating cash bail and creating non detainable offenses.

- More illegals equals more dems equals more votes for them. There have been plenty of documented cases of illegals raping and killing peeps (women) but hard to tell if it's outside the standard dev.

- I don't know why, but it does seem like they want more trans people. Best way to do that is to sew doubt about gender at a young age.

- Abortion as reproductive freedom is lol. Especially as a tax payer funded one. Elective abortion is gross.

- Gov is super inefficient so why give them more $$. I do admit it's a scary thought to cut certain things I like such as Nat Parks and clean waterways (long way to go).

I'll go ahead and continue voting (R). 6/10 vs 2/10 for dems.

I voted a couple weeks ago. Maybe next time.

Andrew Sullivan is and has always been a hypocritical moron. He is just realizes the tide is turning and he is jumping ship before the collision with the rocks. He is just better than most "journalists" at reading the political winds to keep himself relevant.

His far right rhetoric is not based in fact. There are no issues the right has moved to the right on in 20 years. If anything it has moved to the left on fiscal responsibility. Every other issue the right is in almost the same place it was 20 years ago, except it is in the process of kicking the interventionist hawks out of the party. The left has moved so far to the left that they have totally lost sense of where the middle is. Donald Trump was by no means your normal president but from a policy standpoint he was somewhere between George Bush and Bill Clinton. When people say far right now they don't even know what they mean or have any concept of what the political spectrum actually is. They just think by calling the opposition a fascist enough it makes it true.

It is also how amusing Sullivan and others of his ilk are historically to continue to use Hitler as a far right example. The Nazi party was literally the national socialist party. The British and American left was cheering Hitler on for much of the 30's until the point when he was revealed to a fascist in which case they immediately swiveled and claimed he was not of the left but far right.

There is nothing the "right wing" does that is as violent as vivisecting 6- and 7-lb human fetuses - something that the Democrats insist upon while calling it "safe," "health care," or "reproductive justice" or "reproductive freedom."

And then the Democrats insist that US taxpayers fund the entities (e.g., Planned Parenthood) that commit these executions.

Let’s look at some facts instead of rhetoric:

1. The federal deficit went up every single year under Trump. It has been cut in half this year under Biden.
