Are vaporflys faster than dragonflys on track? 1500m-5k

I’ve seen local runners run their PR’s in the vaporfly @1500 (3:45). But imo they still feel too clunky and heavy for the 1500 compared to modern spikes. I defo think they are very competetive for the 5k though.

Somebody told me that vaporflys are prohibited for track races. Anyone able to confirm or deny?

Maximum stack height for distance races on the track is 25mm, so Flys would be out. But that's for World Athletics-associated events. That rule does not apply in the NCAA.

That's probably on an outdoor track, but it'd still feel weird. It feels bad going around curves.

I've ran basically the same as him (3:44) but don't run in them on the track except if I'm doing tempo.

"I've run" is the contraction for "I have run."

So what is the problem?

You don't want a high, stacked shoe for races. (Practice is another thing.) a. You don't need the cushion because the track itself is the cushion. b. When sprinting you need maximum traction when applying force to the ground. Dragonflys with their spikes provide this. Vaporflys with no spikes don't. I myself never wear stacked shoes for anything under 800m in practice. Another reason not to wear Vaporflys for short intervals is you can't practice proper running technique in them because you cannot feel the ground under your feet in them. Foot placement right or wrong is very apparent in spikes. Not so in stacked road shoes. I am not against stacked shoes. Just not for races and shorter intervals.

In a conversation in which both the Vaporflys and the Dragonflys are being discussed, referring to something as "Flys" is not at all clear, especially when one is track-legal and the other is not.

I wore vaporflys for a 5k time trial today on the track. They felt pretty good for the first 2 miles, but I definitely would've liked to have a thinner, more responsive shoe towards the end of the race when I had to pick up the pace a little bit. They are good for workouts/tempos though.

Meh, I've used alphas on a concrete track 5k running low 16:10. I find its grip to be superior to the next and og vapors. Alphas are plenty responsive. I do have a pair of dragonflys, but just lack mondo tracks.

In my personal opinion, I have both, haha, if your on the track wear spikes not vaporflys

I’m running a 1500 pretty soon and this thread got me thinking. I have a pair of new Vaporflys that I’ve only raced once in and a pair of non-carbon-plated Adidas spikes that I wore a lot this spring and then a few times in cross races. I’m trying to get some Dragonflys but they’re all sold out in my size. And I want to run ~low-4:20s (again, 1500), so nothing crazy fast. Do you guys think I should wear the spikes or the Vaporflys while I wait for a restock?
