NYRR Refuses to Pay For Medical Workers At Races, Looking for Free "Volunteers" With Medical Licenses for NYC Marathon

Police Fire Sanitation Unions hijacked NYRR decades ago and get paid double time under the table with Visa/Mastercard Gift Cards. They stopped paying ushers, offiicals, video, writers, parking attendants, drivers, photographers back then too.

Well how else will they pay the all so important non binary runners?

It just boggles my mind how the NYRR is so woke and virtue signals all the time but when you look under their thin veneers, they are enormous cheapskates who keep all the money for themselves despite paying no taxes.

"Insists on free volunteer medical worker"......WTF are you talking about? It's a business. Are you familiar with the objective of a business? If you can get something for free, that's what you do. "Insist" is a silly word to use here. The medical world already gets enough of our money, don't ya think? Volunteering for a race event is something I would expect from them. They should be doing that. "Executive penthouse".....GTFOH with that nonsense.

If your are saying the NYRR is a business, then why don't they pay any taxes? Does the IRS need to do an audit on their business revenues and tax deduction claims?

No biggee. Track meets always have swarms of volunteers doing every job imaginable. How else can charity sports survive.

A non-profit IS a business and is run like one. It is tax advantaged to better execute its mission, and not to maximize profits for shareholders. Your ignorance is staggering.

And yes, I do expect some of the best paid professionals to do volunteer work in their community. It is what non-monsters do.

The NYRR just funnels all "profits" to is executives and board with "expenses". It's like a reverse Robinhood: Take from the poor and volunteers to give to the rich executives and board.

It's a free country. No one is holding a gun to the heads of the volunteers. If someone wants to volunteer they should have the freedom to do so. How else can charity sports survive?

Truck Drivers and Farm Workers are piece workers. Truck Drivers are paid per mile driven, with no pay for waiting for loads or sitting at traffic lights. Farm Workers are paid by the weight or quantity of fruits and vegetables they harvest. It's terrible pay. A ripoff. Which is why Truck Drivers and Fram Workers strive to go to school, change jobs, and improve their incomes. No one forces Truck Drivers and Farm Workers to work for pathetic piece work wages. It's their choice. The same for NYRR Volunteers, Track and Field Volunteers, Road Race Volunteers, and Cross Country Volunteers. No one is forcing anyone to volunteer. It's their own personal choice. Understand?

I'm a physician and I do a lot of volunteer work in my community. I volunteer fairly regularly at a shelter for women who are escaping abuse/domestic violence. I occasionally volunteer at a clinic for the homeless in my city. I helped with the planning of a non-profit that provides affordable housing for low-income families with special medical needs.

Providing free services for a recreational event that charges a hefty fee to participants just doesn't really strike me as a particularly meaningful bit of volunteer work.

The salary of the CEO has to be taxable.

And they seem to be doing such a great job at their "mission." Obesity rates in the US were about 14% when the club started; now they are over 40%. Sounds like CEO is certainly worth $560,000. It's a freakin' running club for goodness sake. I know people who serve as officers of running clubs on a voluntary basis. They do it for the love of the sport, not to get rich.

This is totally f'd up. I hope they jack up the already exorbitant prices of races so they can pay medical workers a fair rate.

From what I gather NYRR grosses around $100M/year. Do the people you know managing running clubs deal with that responsibility? But I agree, $560k seems like a large salary for a CEO of a business that size.... Salaries are generally much higher in NY so that may explain some of it.

I’m a physician and do tons of volunteer work in my community. Both at shelters, and with international organizations providing free healthcare for refugees all over the world.
The average marathoner at NYC makes six figures. They’re spending thousands of dollars for a vacation and hobby jog a 4 hr marathon. NYRR is not exactly the Salvation Army.
Not exactly the kind of “community service” that should demanded of physicians to make them “not monsters”.
Helping you not get hurt doing your expensive hobby is not charity work.
