I think this is a really smart move for him, hopefully he can make a comeback this season. Never was a fan of Julian

Why does he need a running coach? I was under the impression that he had retired from pro running a couple years back and switched to being professional very likable guy.

I can't decide if Pete is a good coach or not. He's similar to Danny Mackey in that every time I'm ready to stick a fork in him as a coach, one of his athletes pulls something off and I start to reassess. I guess if you get enough talent

Pete Julian is the vanilla wafers of coaching. Nothing really objectionable about him but in and of itself nothing special either. Paired with a banana split or something though ... amazing.

That said, Engels is too much of a slap dick to ever make the break to the next level. Will be 5th at the top of the homestretch at the next Olympic Trials then will get rolled up by a couple 2024 versions of 2016 Craig Engels. Will then get a haircut and get a job in marketing somehwere.

What’s the average starting salary for a professional very likeable guy? Asking for a friend in Canada who is currently unemployed.

I have to say that Pete Julian came off as very abrasive in the sweat elite workout with Craig Engels. I would never want to have a coach who acts like that, just sullen and short-tempered.

That was news item in the Lap Count yesterday, which was from a podcast earlier.

He had three athletes finish 6th, 6th and 7th at this years World Champs. Not counting Brazier (hurt) and not counting Klosterhalfen who just won Valencia Half and the Euro Champ 5k. Julian more similar to Schumacher (one could even argue Julian was better in 2022). Not similar to Mackey at all. Julian has had widespread success multiple years now.

Engels made the right choice as he wasn’t going anywhere and he needs to try something new, but I think we all know this isn’t a coaching problem.
