In our sport, doping is a cardinal sin. If you have broken that rule, it is imperative that you have completely atoned before you can be part of the establishment. To atone, you must renounce the behavior that aggrieves the community.
People like her who prevaricate about the circumstances of their use are not trustworthy and do not belong in positions like Chairman of NYRR. Sudafed was not an unknown quantity in 1996. Throughout the 90s there was a big problem with NHL players abusing it. It was widely known to provide performance enhancement.
At its core, doping is an integrity issue. Those who shade the truth and use artifice to distance themselves from overt acts like doping should not be forgiven and welcomed back into the fold, let alone be put in positions of authority and/or influence.
Runners who have doped in their past should be open and honest about it. It’s the only way to bring sunlight and disinfectant in where it is desperately needed in out sport.
