Sadly, you will have men run 2:20 and get no money at all and someone else will run 2:45 and take home five grand. The only way this will end is if a bunch of guys claim to be "non-binary" and sweep the money at every race. $5,000 is a nice chunk of change.

Anybody remember years ago when a bunch of Crossfitters in I believe the Atlanta area set out to prove that Crossfit was better than running and that they could beat runners in a 5K? Pretty decent money was up for grabs. It was talked about on LRC and a group of fast runners went there and just swept up. Race never happened again after that.

A solution to a non-problem. Since they are now awarding prize money, they should also start testing those that win this prize money.

As someone who could not possibly care how the NYRR decides to allocate their prize money, nothing would be more hilarious than half a dozen runners from letsrun showing up registered as non-binary and finishing out of the money and then getting to go home and explain to all their friends and family and work colleagues that a) they are non-binary or b) they lied because they were attempting to scam the system to try to win money, but all they did was create a permanent historical record of their scam or gender uncertainty depending on their circumstances.

How is $5000 prize not "professional"? I thought professional means you get paid to do something.

I lived in NJ in my early twenties and ran 2:22. I wish this existed then.

To make it fair they really should have two categories for non-binary runners depending on their birth gender.

If non-binary category mens nowadays that it'll just be the womens standards that are now open to everyone, I want none of it. Look up their qualifying times and indeed you find the non-binary and womens are the same. So anyone identifying as non-binary (not even needing to be trans) can sign up and qualify in that category. The prize money is just the cheery on top of this cake of ridiculousness.

This has started happening in some Minnesota races. The men's and women's overall winners are faster than everyone in this non-binary category. And the winner of the category is clearly a guy who apparently identifies as 'non-binary'. Pretty easy way to pick up some money for a half-way decent guy runner and lack of competition.

My solution to it is have 'Open' prize money and then women-only. Non-binary equals 'open'.

The non-binary prize is the same as the NYRR member prize for Males/Females, so yes there are NYRR member prizes. One also has to run under 3hr 10min to get said prize money, so they may not pay all top five places. This is clearly posted on their website.

In 2021, 1092 people ran 3:10 or faster at NY. It is not a very fast time, 23 seconds/mile slower than Boston qualifying.
